Tolerance is often viewed as a positive characteristic. Most people can recall a situation in their lives in which tolerance played a crucial role. Tolerating my dog, who now chooses to begin needing attention when I am talking on the phone, has become a necessary behavior of mine this summer. Whether we are tolerating an animal or person, tolerance usually allows us to get through a situation more easily.
Plants have also, over the years, developed a tolerance to situations. Drought-tolerant plants, for example, have characteristics that allow them to survive when other plants may not. A drought-tolerant plant is one that, once established, can survive on the water that is supplied through an average rain fall. Characteristics of drought-tolerant plants include the ability to minimize water loss through the leaves and have the ability to take up great amounts of water, when needed, through their roots. The leaves of these plants may be small, gray in color, succulent, waxy or hairy. Drought-tolerant plants posses the ability to develop a large root system that allows them to seek our water that is deep within the soil profile. It is crucial that while this root system is being developed during the first several years of growth, these plants receive adequate supplemental water.
Although many drought-tolerant plants are considered to be native to this area, drought-tolerant plants are available in a wide range of plants categories. Here is a list of drought-tolerant plants broken up by plant type.
