In this stage adaptation based on cartoons by Charles Addams, which was later turned into various television and movie versions, Gomez and Morticia Addams and their daughter, Wednesday, must conceal their grotesque affinity for all things dark and macabre when Wednesday announces that she has invited her “normal” boyfriend and his parents to dinner. The odd dinner party quickly turns chaotic as both families, along with wacky but well-meaning Uncle Fester, Grandma, brother Pugsley, and the loyal butler Lurch, can’t help but reveal their true selves, as hard as they try to appear normal. When a magical truth serum accidentally gets taken by the wrong person, the dinner party spirals even more.
Sun City productions have a long history of high-quality performances with all onstage and behind-the-scenes details attended to by volunteers, who often play double duty working on sets, costumes, makeup, and promotional materials.
Adrianne Kaplan is preparing her role in the ensemble as a ‘50s bubble gum girl deceased ancestor, but behind the scenes, she is putting together the playbill for the program. “The camaraderie of helping others, especially newcomers, is what I enjoy doing the most,” she says. “With the assistance of various theatre company members, we procure advertisements from local establishments, and I place the ads in the program. We are grateful for our ad patron’s contributions to assist with the cost of printing the programs.”
Russ Howard, newly-elected President of the Theatre Company, will appear as a dead ancestor in the ensemble, but behind the scenes, his role of president has his eye set on the future. “The important thing is that we always want new people that come into the community to participate,” he says. “We want our theater company to continue to be as strong as it’s been in the past.” He says many participants have had past theater experience, but not all — some discover theater as a creative outlet for the first time in their retirement years. “The real reward comes from the enjoyment of everyone there, making the audience react.” For Addams Family, Howard says the actors in the lead roles are doing a great job, complemented by the ensemble members. “It’s going to be a funny show.”

Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Lurch, Grandmama, Pugsley, and of course, Wednesday get set to haunt the stage in Drendel Ballroom for the SC Theatre Company’s upcoming fall musical The Addams Family. (Photo by Tony Pratt/My Sun Day News)
