Summer Athletic Competition

By My Sunday News

This summer, the Stingray Swim Club has become intent on enjoying various outdoor water venues.  For some of the club’s aquatic competitive members, summer has meant the start of the Senior Games Season. The Senior Games are hosted by various Illinois Park and Recreation Districts throughout the state to allow active adults, 50 years and up, to continue competing in their sports of choice.  While Stingrays focus on swimming, many athletes from Sun City join the games in volleyball, golf, bags, tennis, softball, track / field, and pickleball, among other sports.

On Memorial Day Weekend, The Peoria Park District kicked off the start of the Summer Games by hosting the Heart of Illinois Senior Games.  The Stingrays’ coach Len Lencioni participated successfully by capturing eight gold medals in all of his chosen swim meet events.  His races included the 25 yard freestyle, 25 yard breaststroke, 50 yard freestyle, 50 yard breaststroke, 100 yard freestyle, 100 yard butterfly, 200 yard backstroke and 200 yard IM.

Many Sun Citians have now completed registration for the 33rd year of The Six County Senior Olympics headquartered at Maine East High School, Park Ridge.  Various sports events running for 10 days in mid-July will be located in Hoffman Estates, Elk Grove, Schaumburg, Niles, Norridge, Addison, Des Plaines, Mt. Prospect, Dundee Township, Bloomingdale, Highland Park, Northbrook, Lisle, and Park Ridge.  Good luck to all senior participants!
