Rutland Township government continues to function on controversy and divisive behavior, instead of teamwork and unity. The years 2016 and 2017 brought controversies about the handling of nominating petitions and an attempt to knock a long-time incumbent leader off the ballot in last year’s election. Last week, another dustup erupted, involving an alleged failure to process property tax assessments in a timely fashion and/or according to state law.

What kind of community is Huntley on a Saturday night? What do suburban cops actually do? What kind of shifts do they work? What do they think of cop shows on TV? Do they mind if people call them cops?
The Sun Day got some answers to these questions on March 17 when this writer spent four hours riding along with a Huntley officer.
To the casual observer, Sun City’s Eakin Field, home of the community’s Softball Charter Club, is a beautifully landscaped site.
Some of the most exciting and entertaining sporting moments in Sun City take place on its lush acres: 12-inch and 16-inch Chicago-style softball games, special events honoring veterans, all-star games, the National Night Out celebration, skill competition, and the annual softball league playoffs in August.
One of the oldest debates between governors and the governed is a real or perceived lack of communication, or transparency.
In big cities, small towns, farming communities, neighborhoods and organizations, there are frequent criticisms and complaints by the governed that the governors and leaders aren’t transparent enough, available enough, or responsive enough.
After hearing about Huntley’s upcoming water rate increase in May, Sun City residents might be curious how Huntley’s rates compare to those of other communities, now and in the future.

Amid Sun City’s busy activities and resort-style living, there are a few groups that pretty much operate in the deep background. There are 26 of them, and they are called special interest groups. They are generally small groups of residents that pursue various activities inside and outside of Sun City. Unlike Sun City’s 43 charter groups, they are not open to all residents.

There always seems to be something big, significant and creative going on in Huntley Community School District 158. If it isn’t a nearly $40 million expansion of Huntley High School, it’s blended learning for high school students, specialized medical education programs in association with a major area hospital, or helping students achieve record-high standardized test scores.
Each week, the Huntley Police Department compiles a list of all serious criminal incidents that occur in the village. Copies of these public reports are distributed to Sun City’s Neighborhood Watch groups and neighborhood reps, and the Sun Day.

He was asked to assist police officers in a search for a missing elderly lady in the community. He also was asked to recruit some friends to assist him in the activity. He rounded up three friends and reported for “duty.”

One thing never changes in Huntley – and that’s the process of change. Put another way, if you thought 2017 was a banner year for expansion in the Village of Huntley, wait until you see what’s coming in 2018.
