The health of Ukraine’s citizens under the seige of war

On April 22, OHCHR (The United Nations Human Rights Office) reported the number of civilian casualties in the Ukraine as killed: 2,435 and as injured: 2,946. However, Ukraine officials very recently strongly suggest the more accurate figure as 15,000 dead. The nation’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, said weeks of bombardment in the city of Mariupol alone had killed “tens of thousands.” While these estimates vary widely, there is no doubt that both in the general civilian population and in the military, huge numbers of Ukrainian citizens are dying and suffering wounds for their country.

AFA hosts free virtual Alzheimer’s conference

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) will host a free virtual Alzheimer’s educational conference for Illinois residents on Wednesday, May 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. CST as part of the 2022 national Educating America Tour. The conference, which is free and open to everyone, will allow participants to learn from, and ask questions of, health and caregiving experts.

Horsing around was serious business for this Sun City resident

It all started with a horse named Sunshine.

“Sunshine, my first horse, changed my life,” said Sandy Horn.

Horn was a horseman all his life. When he was a young boy, he would meet Dick, a big red draft horse who pulled the milk wagon.

Horn said, “I used to meet the wagon about four houses before ours and feed Dick a treat, usually a cookie, apple, or carrot. I’d pet Dick for a moment and then go to my stop and wait for the wagon to arrive.”

Sun City Theatre’s ‘Sentimental Journey’ takes you on a trip of a lifetime

The Theatre Company of Sun City’s will present Sentimental Journey, a musical about an entire lifetime and the milestones along the way in a production that is both humorous and heartwarming, featuring familiar songs and dances of days gone by.

The show is created by Rob Kaye, director, and Peter Davis, music producer.

On Refuge for Women’s homepage, a graduate is quoted: ““Having a chance to be in a safe place to heal means somebody thought I was worth it, even though I dared not believe I was.”

A heartwarming — and heartbreaking — memory of Ricky

It can be heartwarming when nostalgic memories pop to mind, especially when they involve people in your life that you love.

It can also be heartbreaking.

That’s the way I have felt recently when memories of my nephew, Ricky, pop to mind. Ricky died in late September of an opioid overdose—just one of more than 40,000 Americans in the past year to meet that fate. He was 40 years old.

Sun City hosts 20th annual artisan fair

Sun City will host its 20th annual Artisan Fair on Sunday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Sun City Prairie Lodge.

This is a big milestone for a Sun City event.

“We are excited to once again showcase the talent of Sun City. The event team will provide safety measures so all will be able to enjoy approximately 80 artisan vendors,” said resident Marsha Geist.

DÉJÀ VU all over again

These are supposedly our “golden years.” We looked forward to sleeping late, not going to work every day, and having plenty of free time to do whatever we want with no responsibilities. Thanks to Del Webb and our inability to “just say no,” we are busier now than we were before retirement. Our monthly calendars on our iPads are so full, we have resorted to putting post-it notes on their covers. We now find ourselves asking Alexa to set an alarm every morning, we have no free time whatsoever, and we have more responsibilities than ever before.

A ‘little’ kindness

We’ve all had them: one of those days when it seems nothing’s going quite right. Sharon Little recently had a day when one thing after another tried to trip her up.

Little said, “We were heading north to attend a wedding in Lake Geneva at the Grand Geneva Resort. The ceremony was at 2:30 and we left Sun City at 1:00, thinking we had plenty of time. It was an occasion to get dressed up for; heels and good jewelry.”

Stingrays medal at Senior Olympics

Sun City Stingray members recently wrapped up the 2021 Senior Games season by participating in the Illinois State Senior Olympics Meet, September 17-19, in Springfield, IL.

Forget it Nick, it’s Waterworld

Science fiction is a rather malleable genre, one that can be used to fit any given story. It is, first and foremost, seeing how technology affects us as humans. This can be about said future leaps forward changing ourselves in a singular sense or how we interact with each other. One particular style of film has cropped up again and again: the future film noir. That was typified back in 1982(my birth year) with “Blade Runner,” the quintessential sci-fi noir. Many films have tried to evoke its singular brand of gumshoe voice-over and heady visual spectacle. The latest of which just dropped in theaters and HBO Max.

Making history

Huntley Little League head coach Scott Crowe announced via a July 26 press release, that Huntley Little League’s tournament team, the Huntley Senators, would be representing the Minor Division of players comprised of kids ages 8 through 10 at the Little League World Series (LLWS).

Crowe explained to My Huntley News that the Minor Division can only compete at the state level versus being able to play against international teams in the LLWS, an event that is televised. The international games are reserved for kids ages 10 to 12 that are in the division above the Minors.
