Time to hit the links for Sun City golf leagues

The month of May brings the many golf leagues for seniors to take over morning tee times at Sun City’s Whisper Creek Golf Club, in time for the longest days of sunlight.

The Sun City golf course offers, for the women include Ladies in the Sun, Birdie Bunch, and Whisper Lites (handicap and non-handicap). Also, for the men, Early Birds, Niners, Flying Aces and Prime Time. One informal men’s golf group is Sin City.

‘Play Ball!’ call almost here for softball

Veterans Memorial Field is set and practices have been in earnest for the new Sun City Softball Club season’s opening day, with the first pitch at 5:30 p.m. May 12.

“We’re ready for the new year and hope we won’t be hindered by the weather on opening night,” Sun City Softball Club President Chuck Hund said. “We have a great field crew, led by John Roccosanto, who has worked on leveling the field.”

Sun City’s top pickleball player medals in Naples

One of the toughest challenges in any sport is to repeat as champion.

Sun City’s top pickleball player, John Schwan, accomplished that feat at the U.S. Open Pickleball Championships in Naples, Florida, on April 27. He took on four challengers in the mens singles 75-79 age bracket, 4.0 rating, and defeated them all, returning as a repeat national champ.

Huntley turns out for Special Olympics Torch Run

Dozens of supporters for efforts of area Special Olympics of Illinois Torch Run gathered in cold conditions early, but it was a good day for a local 5K run-walk.

April 5 was the Huntley Police Department (HPD) hosted Fourth Annual “Don’t Be Fooled by a Disability” 5K run-walk event. It is held in support of Special Olympics of Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run. According to HPD Deputy Chief Amy Williams, about 140 runners participated Saturday morning at Huntley Town Square.

Special Olympic athlete Jim Williams is happy because he is able to add another sport to his state competition list, which also includes track and field and basketball.

Sun City couple backs non-chemical cleaning

Concerned over the impacts of cleaning tools which have chemicals in everyday use, a Sun City couple decided to take action.

Five years ago, Genny and Derek Knight joined Norwex Independent Consultants. “Improving the quality of life by radically reducing chemicals in our homes is our mission and passion,” according to the Norwex flier.

At the Village of Huntley Farmers Market March 8, the Knights explained various products of Norwex Inc.

Just peachy

For the last 15 years, Rebecca Tulloch of Bartlett has educated audiences regarding the 11-year history of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL).

As a new Major League Baseball season dawned with Spring Training’s start, an audience of 25 heard about the Rockford Peaches success in the AAGPBL from Tulloch at Huntley Area Public Library Feb. 11.

Metz on mission to keep Holocaust truth alive

Steen Metz remembers the day exactly when, as an 8-year-old only child, his life changed drastically in his hometown of Odense, Denmark. The day was Oct. 2, 1943.

“Two or three German officers came to the door,” Metz said. “They allowed my mother to go to the bakery downstairs to get some food, but they held my father.”

Schwan brings home pickleball gold

Sun City resident John Schwan has kept a memorable pickleball season going strong.

Schwan recently won two gold medals in two Illinois Senior Olympics competition singles for age 75 plus. Illinois Senior Olympics conducts the games, offering with many sports for ages 50 and above.

Retired educator reflects on state honor

After a nearly 30-year career as a teacher, athletic director, and coach, Jim Meyers received a top honor from the state-wide Illinois Association of Athletic Directors (IADA).

Meyers was one of three members of the IADA Class of 2024 Hall of Fame, along with Terry Dobbs who worked at Palatine and Greg King of Sterling, at the May IADA meeting. Meyers explained that due to his retirement as Johnsburg High School Athletic Director in 2003, he is one of the elder statesman so honored.

“I was nominated by the present Johnsburg High School Principal Kevin Shelton, and filled out an informational and career packet from IADA, including letters from colleagues (former tennis coach Rick Bailey), and that went to a committee,” Meyers, a long-tine Sun City resident, said.

“This is our sixth year since I came up with this wild idea. I wish to thank you from the bottom of my heart,” Glenn Grobli, club founder, said.

Antique farm equipment interest going strong

For close to a quarter-century, the McHenry County Antique Farm Equipment Association of Illinois (MCAFQI)has been a gathering place for all who cherish generations-old tractors. Some of the tractors were on display at a recent Huntley Farmers Market.

Membership chairman Jim Jones of Union described the purpose of the 100-member club.

“We go to area fairs, as we were just at Harvard Milk Days, have tractor treks to places like Lake Geneva, Wis. and work with FFA Alumni and McHenry County Farm Bureau.”

Huntley Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for Dairy Mart May 20.

Citizen bystanders’ CPR effort saves life

Many heartfelt thank-yous highlighted a Huntley Fire Protection District gathering.

Sun City resident Dennis Wolff thanked Huntley Fire Protection District members, 911 dispatchers and Huntley Police Officers for teaming together to save his life.

Wolff, 79, was walking at the Del Webb Fitness Center Dec. 6, 2022, when two retired nurses, Barb Verdich and Nancy Parente, noticed something was wrong. Wolff had suffered a cardiac arrest. But the two retired nurses quickly assisted Wolff with administering CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) before he was transported to Northwest Medicine Huntley Hospital.
