Next time a snowstorm heads our way, get this hefty book for your days inside. It’s not about a lawyer, but if you grew up in Chicago or are interested in contemporary history and/or in the history of the print journalism, this might be just for you.

Docked for brunch in a friendly port

If you’ve lived in the Northwest Suburbs for any length of time, you probably know of the Port Edward Restaurant in Algonquin. This has been a landmark in the community for 53 years and counting.

...

I am recently widowed and I am realizing that I just can’t do things as easily as I once could do. I want to retain my independence, but with so many scams in the world, I am skeptical about asking for outside help.

Sun City takes on the Land of the Rising Sun

Sun City residents David and Karen, along with their two sons, recently visited Tokyo.

‘Twas the season to go MIA with a TIA

The first hint of trouble came as I got out of bed the day after Christmas at 6:30 a.m. I stumbled because I had gone all weenie-legged on the right side.

“Well, that’s strange,” I thought. “Must have slept funny.” I flippered off to the bathroom.

La La Land – a musical treat & Passengers – first class adventure

Our publication schedule precluded writing about these on a timely basis, but nonetheless, it’s rare that I see two films in a row I can actually recommend. It’s possible by now you’ve seen these; if not catch them while you can.

Cinematic ‘16: a year in review

This is the Sun Day News’ third annual review of the past year in movies.

Everybody loves a Bimbo…

A surefire indicator of success is when you have a namesake restaurant. There is Harry Caray’s, Wolfgang Puck’s, and Wendy’s, just to name a few. I couldn’t wait to tell Nancy she had achieved this great honor when I discovered Bimbo’s Italian Restaurant in McHenry. Note to all males, don’t do this, it will not end well…

I’m reusing last year’s resolution to cook a company meal once a month. This item from our prolific cookbook section ought to help.

Ask an Angel: January 12, 2017

My mom and I travel together once a year. It’s a tradition, but this year her health has been compromised, and I am not sure she will be able to keep up like she used to. My desire is for her to relax and not be stressed about her limitations. I wonder if there are any ideas or tips that could ease the stress?

Selecting furnace air filters

Furnace filters were added to furnaces by the manufacturers to protect the blower and the heat exchangers from being fouled by contaminants in the air. Filter manufacturers differentiated their products by using various filter materials that removed more contaminants from the air, but at the expense of restricting the airflow.

Just one more purgatory to add to the pile

I was more than a bit surprised when my wife pointed to the car just after breakfast on Black Friday and flashed me that “Buckle up, Bucko” look. After all, she knew my policy about hitting the mall on the worst shopping day of the year.

Tom’s Top Holiday Movies

Christmas festivities are well under way for most of us. I thought I would summarize a list of “Holiday” films that, no doubt you have seen already. But if perchance you missed one or two of them, they are all worth viewing, AND they are all four star films, at least by my criteria.

The Diners decide: Top 10 of 2016

How time flies when you’re old and having fun! Another year and another 23 restaurant reviews bite the dust. Time once again for the Dining Duo’s “Top Ten” list of this year’s restaurants.

‘Nocturnal Animals’ has you hoping for daylight

To begin with, there were two movies I was interested in seeing, but only one column to write. The first was Miss Sloan starring Jessica Chastain, the other Nocturnal Animals starring Amy Adams. Both are favorite actresses of mine, so I flipped a coin and it came up tails. I have since thrown the coin away; it made the wrong decision.

A well-received contribution to any potluck or picnic, in my experience, is deviled eggs. I still use a basic recipe from my 50-year-old Better Homes & Gardens cookbook. So, when I saw this book, I had to have it.

Ask an Angel: December 15, 2016

This will be my first holiday spent alone. My husband died six months ago and we never had children. I don’t know how to get through the long winter by myself as well.

Garage Access to Your House

Did you ever want to give temporary access to your house to a visitor or a service person? If you have a keyless entry keypad on the outside of your garage, chances are it can be programmed to activate a four-digit PIN for a programmed number of hours or number of accesses after which it will expire and the PIN will no longer open the door.

The tolerant testimony of molasses and vermouth

I don’t know how old I was when my curiosity kicked in, but I finally asked Mom: “Who is that, anyway?”

She had given me a chore to do that I attacked with my customary zeal — which is to say that I dragged my feet and mourned my tragic station in life.

This looks like a fun book for tweens, published by Dorling Kindersley, a well-known name in the school library reference world. Huge print, many pictures, and colorful sidebars will be attractive even to reluctant readers.

Ask the Woodchucks: Vacation Checklist

As many Sun City residents pack for warmer climates, it is important to spend an hour or so to get your house ready for winter. When you are going to be away for a week or more you should prepare your home so there will be no surprises on your return.

Ask an Angel: December 8, 2016

The current events of our time are making me feel overwhelmed and depressed. How can I fight the down feelings I have?

Try as I might – Rental Recommendations to take you through the holidays

I thought I would give you some recommendations on movies a few years old; they are all great and worth your time to rent or stream.

“Georgia’s” on my mind

Purchasing tickets for Bingo in Del Webb is akin to planning a secret military operation in a Third World Country. You have to get up at the butt crack of dawn, have all the troops for your table assembled and ready, and all paperwork must be filled out with your I.D. card and money in hand.

Of famines and feasts, minnows and beasts

When a century-old curse finally gets lifted, it’s hard not to look for whatever other curse might be lurking beneath. At least, that’s what a die-hard Cubs fan does.

Takeaways from the Woodchucks at the Consumer Expo

We went to the consumer expo on October 27 and spoke with several vendors who supply services like those we talk about in this column. These people are out there every day seeing the things people need repaired or replaced so they could give us a fresh perspective.
