Never been here before, but it’s nice to see it all again

When I was younger, I often experienced feelings of déjà vu, but it’s been a long time since it’s happened to me.

I am my mother’s caregiver and up until recently things have been going well. She has dementia. Recently, I have been unable to sleep through the night because she gets up and wanders throughout the house.

Why stop at Florida… when the Bahamas are so close!

Time for a few warm thoughts. Many neighbors have fled the confines of Del Webb to the warmer clines of Florida, Texas, Arizona, or other locations while we are shivering, shoveling, and wrapping ourselves up to stay warm. Even with warm(er) weather approaching, getting some sunshine is always a good thing. Okay, so where would be a convenient tropical location with blue skies, warm waters, and oh, somewhere reasonably close? How about the Bahamas?

Batman v Superman — an exhausting ride

There are 170 million reasons to see this movie. That number equals the gross receipts for the opening weekend of this super hero adventure.

Hey, America, what part of ersatz don’t you understand?

I came down with a cold this week, the kind of epic head-pounding, nose-geysering, throat-blazing, lung-honking cold that could cause a guy to get exiled from a shopping mall — or maybe even an emergency room. A lesser man might have buckled, but not me.

Ready, Set, Spring

Last night my daughter Mary and I went to see the movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2”. This was a much anticipated mother-daughter outing. The movie was about the importance of family, with the underlying theme of an 18-year-old daughter choosing a college and moving away from her family. It is a story that has been playing out in our home this winter. Mary has chosen a college that will take her 620 miles from family but will bring her much closer to determining her unique calling in life.

It’s hot in heaven

We recently received a letter from one of our loyal readers inquiring if we knew of a restaurant that served authentic Red Beans and Rice. After an exhausting search, we stumbled upon a little bit of the bayou in Naperville called Heaven on Seven. Nancy and I checked out their menu online and decided to travel down south to give them the once over.

My shelving cart had three books with “rain” in the title and/or pictured on the cover; reason enough to examine them more closely. I realized that I’d read one of them already and given it high marks for an intriguing plot with good writing. Author Deb Caletti says the idea came to her one morning when she overslept and woke to wonder if her husband was still home.

Ask the Woodchucks: Woodchucks furniture repair day

Each year the Woodchucks hold two furniture repair days for residents. One is in April and one is in October. Thirty to forty Woodchucks are available in the shop on these days to repair loose chairs, broken tables, broken picture frames, and other wooden items needing repair.

A perfect pizza and pastaria place

One night our phone rang and our friends Tom and Linda said they just dined at a restaurant we recently reviewed. This reminded them that we haven’t seen each other for a while and suggested we get together.

For several hours a week, I work at the Huntley Library re-shelving items. During this process, opportunity presents itself for me to peruse materials I’d not see while looking on my own. Very often I say to myself, oh, that looks interesting … and then I keep it or jot down the info. I’ll share some with you that pique my interest.

Miracles From Heaven — or was it spontaneous remission?

“Miracles from Heaven” is a modest Hollywood production which had a budget of $13 Million. The movie was adapted from a book written by Christy Beam, the mother of a seven-year-old girl with an incurable disease whose name I can’t spell or pronounce.

Help. Since my mother passed away, I’ve noticed my father has been drinking. When I confront him, he denies it, but it is obvious. I know he is grieving, but this is troubling. I’m not sure how to approach this.

Each year the Oxford Dictionary comes out with a list of words that they have added to their publication. Words such as pneumatologically, studerite, and waterly were added the dictionary in 2015. Way back in 2001, the word “app” was added.

A holiday explanation for when a calendar just isn’t enough

It was one of those falling-asleep moments in bed long ago, when my drowsy wife mumbled to me, “Is Easter two Sundays from now or three?” We had plans for a family gathering on Easter Sunday that would take some preparation, but that was at least two weeks away. Maybe three.

Body by plants

It happened exactly one year ago. My active, seemingly healthy husband was in the hospital recovering from totally unexpected triple bypass surgery. We were just beginning to get used to the fact that he’d had a heart attack as he was recovering smoothly ready to go home on February 14 when his heart stopped. (I later learned that is not totally unexpected after open-heart surgery: the heart apparently decided it had enough).

Weighing in on Windows 10

Should I install Windows 10 or not? Microsoft has been very persistent that you download and install Windows 10 on your Windows 7 or Windows 8 computer. Should you do this?

London Has Fallen – a little too far for me

This is the worst time of the year to find a good movie to see, much less write about. All of the films with Oscar potential were released at the end of last year, and its months until the summer “blockbuster” season.

The Oscars – justice finally served

I had a number of complaints about the Academy Awards show last Sunday. First and foremost, they chose to show their panorama of self-adoration opposite the swan song episode of the world’s most popular TV show, Downton Abbey.

Events that will put a spring in your step

My kids have this unspoken competition between themselves. Periodically, they will take a picture of themselves (yes, I have just dated myself by refusing to call it a selfie) and then use that picture as the screen saver on my phone. The result is that whenever I look at my phone I see their bright, smiling face.

Peggy’s puddin’ surprise
