MY SUN DAY NEWS
April 23, 2015
Q. My daughter keeps telling me I need to update my look. Where do I begin? I am on a limited budget!
A century ago in the early days of automobiles, the motto went: “You can buy a Ford motorcar in any color you like—as long as it’s black.” An equal number of choices were available when it came to brand name or body style.
Here is a list of a few films for the Netflix/On Demand crowd. If you missed these the first time around, you might consider them. Any or all will provide a great evening’s entertainment.
A stone’s throw off I-90 at Route 59, about a half-mile north as the eagle flies, is a restaurant in Hoffman Estates known as Stone Eagle Tavern. (Notice how cleverly we tied that altogether? Boy, we’re good!)
According to Donna Crane, writer for the Voice Newspaper out of Aurora, Illinois, the average American consumes 150 pounds of chemicals each year. She says that in any grocery store, you will see tens of thousands of boxed, bagged, jarred, canned, and frozen items begging for your attention.
I started a new diet a week ago, and I’ve already lost six pounds. That got your attention.

My Dad has dementia/Alzheimer’s and has become very argumentative, especially with my sister, who is his main caregiver. I have more patience with him than she does. How can I convey that she has to have greater understanding of his disposition?
I live in an original Del Webb-built home, and I can hear mice when they occasionally crawl up the siding and get into the attic. Do you have any solutions to prevent this from happening? Some of my neighbors have the same problem.
I am responsible for the maintenance of 4 vehicles. They range from a 1995 Chevrolet pickup truck to a 2013 Honda Odyssey van. Three vehicles for business use, one for personal. Because several of the vehicles have not been driven in 4 months, I have spent the past few days, having them cleaned, filling them with fuel, making sure the insurance and registration papers are accurate and checking to see if they need to have an oil change.
If you keep your eye on the crime reports over the next several weeks, you might see my face as the cops haul me away.
The history of Cinderella goes back to the early 1600s when Charles Perrault first penned a story about the “persecuted heroine.”
There is a restaurant location on Route 47 just a stone’s throw north of Wisted’s Market, which has gone through many lives in the last few years. The latest incarnation is Pub 47, which just opened its doors on February 9th, and we stopped in 2 weeks later.
As the owner of a seasonal business, I am often asked “What do you do in the winter?” For many years, my stock answer was “I change diapers.” When you have three children all within three years and three months, you change a lot of diapers.
Question: The flame on the burners of my gas stove recently turned orange. They used to be blue. Is that a problem?
Q. I love the home improvement shows on television, and I find myself motivated to do some “spring cleaning.” I am limited, though, because of some physical restraints. How do I dive in and get what I need done?
The latest burglary in Sun City was accomplished by lifting the sliding glass door up into the upper track enough so that the lower edge could be swung out, clearing the lower track. This is the reverse of how the door was originally installed. This can be eliminated by closing that gap above the sliding door. A wooden dowel slipped into this gap can prevent the door from being lifted out.
It’s that “magically delicious” time of year again. A time when pseudo Irishmen turn the color of shamrocks from drinking too much green beer and the aroma of cooking cabbage permeates the air. We are referring, of course, to St. Paddy’s Day. The Dining Duo celebrated early at the McNally’s Traditional Irish Pub in St. Charles.
Dr. Don Colbert, M.D. in the introduction to his book Toxic Relief says, “Someone once told me that if our bodies were sold on the open meat market, they are so full of toxic poisons that they wouldn’t pass USDA inspection.”
Q. I have no family nearby and I don’t know how to deal with all the uncertainty around me. I focus on the bad news and the turmoil in our world. How can I fight the down feelings I have?
In the fall of 1971, which was a million years ago for those of you younger than 45 or so, I was just starting a job as a new teacher. Marlan Davis, my department chairman, opened his greeting to the English department by stating, “As we sit here in 1971, we are closer to the start of the 21st Century than we are to the start of World War II.”
The newspapers, airways, and countless websites were filled with comments and analysis for days following the Oscar presentations. Buried somewhere in all that nonsense was the fact that viewership was down 16 percent from last year. One pundit wrote a lengthy story trying to explain why.
“Hero” is too strong a word in this case. Instead, call me “loving husband,” or “caring friend.” But not “hero.”
The Dining Duo was recently cruising in the “Fatmobile,” northbound on Route 31, when our eyes suddenly spotted a parking lot in front of Marzano’s Wood Fired Italian restaurant in McHenry that was overflowing with cars. We decided it was our duty to see what all the fuss was about.
On a blustery 2-degree (-15 degree wind chill) evening, a couple married for over 40 years left their “fortress of solitude,” otherwise known as Del Webb, for a date night of dinner and a show on Valentine’s Day.
This is a true story about McFarland, California. It’s a town of 12,000 people located in the San Joaquin Valley, famous for its rich farmland and vegetable production. The population is 95 percent Hispanic, virtually all of them dependent on picking crops as their only source of income.
Q. I like to go for walks, but this season has been a challenge for me. I don’t feel motivated to exercise in my home. How can I stay active without going stir crazy?
read the article in the February 12 edition of Sun Day about dripping sounds from a furnace. I have a similar problem, but it stems from my water heater.
Water keeps dripping down the copper tube on the side of our water heater onto the floor. Is this a problem or is it normal?
I once admitted publicly that I had “never seen a Kevin Costner movie I didn’t like.” My perspective on him hasn’t changed after seeing Black or White, but admittedly this is at the lower end of my “Costner scale.”
Jim and Nancy do not disclose the fact that they will review a restaurant before they attend, ensuring their reviews are unbiased and uninfluenced by their position with the Sun Day.
