Early voting in Sun City saw mixed bag of wait times

Early voting was available in Sun City from October 26-29. More than 80 million Americans have cast ballots in the U.S. presidential election, by Thursday, October 29. This was a record-breaking turnout, accounting for more than 58% of the total voter turnout of 138 million from 2016. Only 47 million voted before Election Day in 2016.

Due to COVID-19, all 2020 General Election voters were encouraged to cast a ballot before Election Day, either by mail or during early voting.

Board approves camera installation and spillway construction

Residents that have kept up to date with the SCCAH Board of Directors meetings may already be aware of the Board’s new and old business highlights that took place at the September 23 meeting.

For those unfamiliar, the Board has approved the motion to install cameras in the Prairie and Meadowview Lodges, as well as the Millgrove Woodshop. The camera installations are part of a series of phases to monitor the improvement of security and cost savings as stated by SCCAH Board President, Dennis O’Leary.

Neighborhood Watch plans parade to honor first responders

Sun City’s Neighborhood Watch is planning a new event, the Sun City’s Sirens & Lights Parade, to honor, thank and show support for our Police, Fire Departments, and first responders.

A motorcade of fire engines and police motorcycles will blare their emergency sirens and flash their lights as they follow the 5.5-mile route in Sun City on Tuesday, October 6 at 4:30 p.m.

Empty classrooms create void in volunteer community

Leggee Elementary School’s popular Buddy program shut down when the coronavirus cancelled classes last spring. Now, with schools still shuttered for safety, the gap has widened between students in need and their volunteer lifelines, many of them Sun City residents.

“I have volunteers who have been with me since the beginning,” said District 158 Volunteer Coordinator Eileen Delahanty. “These people are like my family. I’m very concerned for them.”

Reed Rd. multi-use path project makes way for an enhanced pedestrian experience

As of August 15, the Village of Huntley concluded construction on a continuous multi-use path along the north side of Reed Road stretching an approximate distance of 0.25 miles and is now open for use to the public.

According to Tim Farrell, Director of Public Works and Engineering for the Village of Huntley, the path project began in direct response to the announcement of the Illinois Department of Transportation’s (IDOT) Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP).

Mum’s the word

Under normal circumstances, Sun City’s Sunflower Garden Club would have hosted their annual mum flower sale this month, demonstrating the beauty and vibrancy that mums can offer residents.

Meet the governing board candidates as they prepare for upcoming elections

Tuesday, August 4 provided the opportunity for all six candidates competing for the five open seats on the Sun City Community Association of Huntley (SCCAH) board of directors, to mingle amongst each other as they prepare their campaigns for the upcoming elections.

With the October 14 deadline for residents to cast their votes quickly approaching, this election poses some unique obstacles for the candidates having to navigate around the restrictions placed upon them by the current pandemic.

Huntley Walmart to host drive-in movies

The Huntley board of trustees unanimously approved a motion for the Walmart supercenter off State Route 47 to host a series of drive-in movies on Friday, August 21 and Saturday, August 22.

The return of e-learning

Every residence where a student lives in Huntley Community School District 158 will become a center of learning “temporarily” replacing the traditional classrooms in the 2020-2021 school year.

On the first day of student remote attendance set for Friday, August 21, all students in District 158 will report from their own residences. This is what’s called a modified remote learning model for this fall.

COVID-19 Cases Rising in Lake and McHenry Counties

Public health officials in Lake and McHenry Counties are urging the public to take action to slow the spread of COVID-19. As of August 3, the testing positivity rate in the North Suburban Region was 4.9 percent, with daily increases reported in 4 of the past 10 days.

The ongoing discussion on whether to approve of Woodstock Hotel, Inc.’s petition to construct a four-story, 100 room Hampton Inn Hotel appears to be getting some traction within the confines of Huntley’s body of government. As of July 13, the Huntley Plan Commission recommended the approval of the hotel project by a vote of four to one.

The 63,208 square foot hotel is slated to occupy 3.7 acres of the 11.3-acre Lot 2 of the Huntley Crossings Final Plat of Subdivision, with the main entrance to face towards Route 47.
