Prior to becoming a lawyer and establishing a law firm in Huntley, Michael Fleck was a chemist. He did his research as part of the research faculty at the University of Illinois, and even earned a patent for an electric carbon monoxide filter.

Diane Naples was going to give up. Though she had already dedicated 15 years to creating Easter baskets and donating them to children in need, health issues sidelined her this year and, as she put it, “I just haven’t gotten back to my old self.”

Enter Crate Free Illinois, a nonprofit organization that Chipkin is in the process of forming. The Corrections

It was a routine day at the Joliet Correctional Center reception area one day in 1980. David Grant was a sergeant involved in prisoner intake.

One of the most notorious and infamous serial killers in the nation’s history entered the facility. He had just been convicted and sentenced to death for killing 33 young boys over a span of a decade. His name was John Wayne Gacy. He was well known to Grant and other corrections officials at Joliet that day. Grant, a resident of Sun City since 2012, tells it this way.

Lion Hearted

Jack and Helen Anderson have more than 50 years of service combined, yet there’s no sign of them slowing down. The two currently serve as the secretary and president of the Lions Club of Sun City – Huntley, respectively. “The Lions has always been a family thing,” says Helen. “It’s something we can do together, and it has been a lot of fun.”

Her father’s keeper

Suzy Phillips Anderle of Sun City was seven months old in September, 1944, when her father, Joseph L. Phillips, was killed in action in World War II. For the past year, she has worked to enhance his legacy of service with her own historical research and travels. On this Veterans Day of 2014, this is her story:

Buggie up

When Tiger and Eleven show up in Neighborhood 20, everyone perks up. As they are pushed around in their customized vehicles, folks come out of their houses to greet them. Residents stop weeding their gardens to say hi, jogging fitness buffs stop and say hello. Even the high school cross country runners sometimes pause and trot over to get a glimpse of the neighborhood celebrities.
