MY SUN DAY NEWS
Ever get itchy, watery eyes and a constantly running nose, and of course, a scratchy throat caused by seasonal (fall and spring) allergies? You’re not alone.
I am not interested in moving out of my home! My children are encouraging me to consider moving to assisted living because I have fallen twice. I did not get hurt, yet they are alarmed. Any suggestions?
What do you get when you cross Jimmy Buffet, Jackie Chan, and Disney’s Tiki Room? Give up? You get the Breakers Restaurant in Crystal Lake.
Who hasn’t dreamed about an island vacation? I was surprised to see an entire magazine on the topic. Evidently, many people must do more than dream. Every issue of Islands magazine provides a nearly unlimited number of island destinations. Editors aim to make it simple to pick the best vacation based on your needs and desires.
At a certain point early this summer, I became very disenchanted with ornamental grasses. I was seeing so many ornamental grasses that were just not growing well. In many yards, the ornamental grasses were either small or only portions of the plants were showing any signs of life. On the other side of the spectrum, some ornamental grasses were taking over planting beds. It seemed like a no-win situation.
I moved into Sun City about six months ago and would like to replace or repaint my faded address numbers. Is there anywhere that you know of that they can be purchased? If not, any hints as to what type of paint can be used for touching up the numbers?
There’s going to be a Halloween party at Drendel Ballroom on October 25. Starts at 6 p.m. Costumes are optional. Chances are, most folks will probably show up as Dracula, Frankenstein, a Ghostbuster, goblin, skeleton, or a famous entertainer or politician, with fake beards and noses, and maybe “extreme” face painting. Someone will probably put cemetery and haunted house noises on the PA system. So, what’s the occasion?

If you tell me I have nine months to finish a task, my first response is, “Nine months? That’s it? How about nine years? Can I have that?”
In recent months, the Sun City board of directors and its advisory committees have taken on some large and complicated maintenance projects. Some bumps in the road have occurred when the process of decision-making became complex and financially challenging.
As I mentioned in my Happy Trails column, my wife is currently 35 weeks pregnant, and there’s a possibility that my son’s birth may impact the production of an upcoming edition. That said, depending on when he’s born, the Sun Day may not publish its October 20, November 3, or November 17 edition, the most likely being either the October 20 or November 3 edition. So if you go to your mailbox one of those dates and not find your edition of the Sun Day, that means my son has entered this fine world. With that, please keep my wife and my son in your thoughts for a healthy and safe delivery.
On September 21, the Sun City board of directors stopped talking about the rear waterfall issue, and decided how to fix it.
It’s still several weeks until Halloween, and already the creatures of the night have come calling. Our first visitor last night was that toad — as big as a tennis ball — who likes to sit next to the screen door just outside the back door. He’s been showing up now and then just after sunset to sit in the same spot, and for the life of me I can’t figure out what he wants.

Huntley’s once-vibrant outlet center is steadily disappearing, and its future remains a big mystery.
The suddenness and wonder of the sights and sounds poured over all of us as hundreds of visitors in the tower watched the September 8 launch of this spacecraft for the Asteroid Sample Return Mission. We were just 2.3 miles from the launch pad and 50 feet above ground as the blastoff of the huge Atlas V rocket impacted our senses and our emotions.
Maintenance projects and Meadow View Lodge fitness center hours were the main topics discussed by the Sun City board of directors on September 7.
While sitting in the Drendel Ballroom engrossed in a heated game of Bingo, we got a hot tip on a new breakfast joint. One of the “Bingo Queens” told us about Tony’s Cafe in Crystal Lake.
Letters for the week of October 6.
Recently, our Sun City community rejoiced with the opening of the new state-of-the art 128-bed Centegra Hospital located on Haligus Road. Did you know that the same Centegra Health System supporting this large major medical facility is available in Prairie Lodge as a walk-in clinic treating lesser health issues amongst our residents?
You may want to skim this book while considering it as a gift for someone you know who is constantly focused on their cell phone, unable to string together two sentences together without saying “um, like…awesome.”
Lately, the lyrics from “Turn, Turn, Turn,” the 1960s song by The Byrds, have been floating around in my head. ‘To everything-turn, turn, turn. There is a season – turn, turn, turn. And a time to every purpose under heaven.” I believe the term is “earworm,” and now I am passing it along. “A time to be born, a time to die. A time to plant, a time to reap. A time to kill, a time to heal. A time to laugh, a time to weep.”

We have mice nesting in our bathroom vent pipe, and the attic insulation is riddled with tunnels, so I assume we may have mice in other ducts as well. The exterminator says to kill them, but we don’t want our house to stink of dead mice. Is there a way to drive them out other than by calling in the Pied Piper?
At the risk of being redundant, which I am, I repeat for the umpteenth time: true stories make the best movies.
I landed in the hospital after a fall in my home. I had to go to rehab, and I don’t want it to happen again! I consider myself in good shape and a youthful senior, yet this fall took me by surprise. What can I do?
The fun and friendly competition of Del Webb Sun City’s Spelling Bee concluded with three spellers reigning victorious at the end of the night: Bill Clanton took first place, Linda Rogers took second, and Fred Kimmel came in third.
Being a writer, I’m always on the hunt for creative inspiration. Being a latte-loving writer, I’m always at a coffee shop listening to what I hear going on around me, whether I want to or not.
The Pokemon have come to Sun City.
My husband’s and my older son, Jim, has been suffering from Fibromyalgia for at least 12 of his nearly 45 years of life. Any newly-injured part of his body seems to trigger more of the disease’s extreme discomfort.
The love affair between Huntley and the retirement, senior living, and hospital industries seems to have no end.
My clothes dryer has become pretty opinionated lately.
My dad has been released from the hospital to a rehab facility. I have been informed by the staff there that he has is a very difficult patient.
