MY SUN DAY NEWS
Do you know what’s happening on Sunday October 24? It’s that time of the year when you load up on candy and other treats. Of course…it’s HALLOWEEN but it’s NOT. Halloween is still going to be October 31, but October 24 is TRICK OR TREAT TIME FOR SUN CITY. So be ready when your doorbell rings and little Munchkins say “trick or treat.” It happens from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday. And then, the best part: after 3 p.m. and it’s done, you eat the leftovers.
The Cold War was a state of political and military tension after World War Two between powers in the Western Bloc (the United States and its NATO allies) and the Eastern Bloc (the Soviet Union and its allies). The “war” lasted from 1947 until the dissolution of the Soviet Union on December 26, 1991. The threat of nuclear war hung over the world during those years, with each side engaging in espionage of all kinds to learn what the other side was up to.
For several hours a week, I work at the Huntley Library re-shelving items. During this process, opportunity presents itself for me to peruse materials I’d not see while looking on my own. Very often I say to myself, oh, that looks interesting…and then I keep it or jot down the info. I’ll share some with you that pique my interest.
Since I was already 82, I wanted quality of life to the years that remained, and I did not want to go through the terrible side effects of chemo.
Ah, the joys of late October—giving treats tomonster-clad kids, glorying in the trees’ technicolor display, putting in the first plantings of my 2016 vegetable garden… Wait… what? Planting veggies in October?
The process of tucking our children into bed has come full circle in our home. The nightly ritual used to be a very hands-on event for my husband and I.
This Sunday, October 25, from 1-4 p.m. (before the little monsters haunt your Sun City doorstep howling for treats) you can do a bit of your own howling at Huntley’s Pub 47 “Halloween Monster Mash.”
One Sunday morning Nancy popped out of bed like a piece of toast from a toaster and proclaimed, “I’m not cooking, let’s go out for breakfast.” I am now faced with a dilemma. Do I get my lazy butt out of bed, or lie here and starve? I quickly replied, “good idea dear.” You know what they say, “happy wife, happy life.” Remembering that our neighbor recently recommended Bella’s Short Stack in Algonquin, I decided now would be a good time to try it.
The trees and bushes in your yard will do better this winter if you water them well before the first frost. You should run your hose at about half flow on each tree for about an hour once or twice a week until the first freeze. The bushes will need one third of that amount of water.
For those who attend the Theatre Company of Sun City’s upcoming production of “Oklahoma!” a sense of déjá vu may set in. This is because Bob Hernandez and Sara Tustin, whose names are attached to many characters throughout the company’s history, are once again reprising their roles as Curly McLain and Laurey Williams, respectively, after 10 years.
At about 8:15 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, I sat down to write this column for what seemed to be the millionth time. I was in a very distracted mood. Unsurprisingly, I was swiftly interrupted by yet another distraction, this time in the form of a text message.
First Service Residential, Sun City’s management company, didn’t have to go far to find a new executive director for our community.
There have been many memorable seasons in Sun City softball, but the recently completed 2015 one soared over the top.
Laura Landro, in the September 1, 2015 edition of The Wall Street Journal, disclosed facts for the 3.5 million known Americans who are non-melanoma skin cancer patients.
Exiting the Smoky Mountain National Park from Gatlinburg, TN, we began navigating the downhill, mountainous, switchback roads leading to Asheville, NC.
What do Sun City’s current and future leaders think are the biggest issues facing the community? What do they think about a current controversial issue – the out-sourcing of accounting and financial functions to First Service Residential?
This is a special memo to the 200 Lifestyles Magazine delivery volunteers in Sun City. Starting in December, for four months, you’re all getting a winter vacation.
As I take my 6-month break from the Sun Day Newspaper, I want to share my health story that has taken place over the past year.
Did you come to the Huntley Fall Fest the weekend of September 25 through the 27? It was absolutely terrific – the weather was perfect, the entertainment great; all-in-all a huge success.
Lucky, our English Springer Spaniel has taught us many life lessons. Her perseverance regarding chasing squirrels is unmatched. The sliding glass door in our kitchen looks out onto our back yard. Each time she sees a squirrel, we let her out, and she runs full force towards the agile rodent and almost catches it.
The autumn leaves are starting to peek through, da Bears are losing football games, and Oktoberfest is in full swing. Because of this, Jim and I decided to travel to Lake Zurich to feast at Fritzl’s European Restaurant.
I have a rabbit in my window well that can’t get out. I don’t have a cover and would like to get one after the rabbit is out.
My buddies Mike and Bill swung by last week to pick me up for a round of golf—a happy surprise, because lately Mike’s life has been held hostage by home remodeling.
Letters for the week of October 8
“Life is unsustainable in outer space.” Chilling words for those brave enough to enter the new frontier knowing that one mistake could be fatal for all.
I am a recent widow. My husband took care of all our finances and paperwork. I am overwhelmed to tackle this because I have been out of touch. How can I begin to understand all he used to take care of?
For the past two decades, the Huntley post office has remained quiet while the community has transformed itself from a small farming town to a robust, fast-growing urban suburb whose population has soared from about 3,000 to more than 25,000.
I’m going to be blunt. Under very strict parameters, I believe in assisted suicide and human euthanasia. More in human euthanasia than in assisted suicide, in fact, but unless you’re a death-row inmate, human euthanasia isn’t a remote possibility in this country, so assisted suicide is the next best option…I guess.
Sun City’s gatehouse is like an old, worn out antique – “what do we do with it?”
September is Healthy Aging Month. One subject that seems to affect all of us, especially as we age, is skin cancer.
