MY SUN DAY NEWS
My kids have this unspoken competition between themselves. Periodically, they will take a picture of themselves (yes, I have just dated myself by refusing to call it a selfie) and then use that picture as the screen saver on my phone. The result is that whenever I look at my phone I see their bright, smiling face.
I’d like to share my finding over my Architectural career regarding color perception and safety, especially for the seniors and the elderly.
St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner. It’s that “magical” fun-filled holiday that fills the void between Valentine’s Day and April Fool’s Day. This year we celebrated at Peggy Kinnane’s Irish Restaurant and Pub in Arlington Heights.
The Sun City Lions and Diane Ahrens from VFW Post 298 Auxiliary proudly display some of the items donated by Fox Valley residents to help homeless vets transition into structured housing.
While the Sun City Strutters might be known for their grand annual performances, the dancers delight audiences in humbler arenas as well. The Sun City Strutters, composed of about 70 members who normally perform two large winter and spring dance events, also take their show on the road.
When I was a kid, health food was something parents gave their children when they hated them.
Imagine a class where there is no homework and no test; it is learning for the joy of learning. Sounds too good to be true, right?
When the original plans were being crafted about creating a radio station in Huntley, most of the benefits to the community were obvious. One was not. The profound impact we would have on college students to help shape their educational experience, and probably ultimately their careers, was not on the list.
In addition to cancer and heart disease (discussed in Part 1 of this topic), two other major illnesses pose a huge threat to our healthy aging. They are diabetes and obesity.
Thursday, April 14, Sun City Huntley will host its annual Spring Consumer Showcase at Prairie Lodge, located at 12880 Del Webb Blvd. in Huntley. Showcase hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The northern area of California offers a variety of vacation destinations. The wine country of Napa, Sonoma, and Russian River, and the coastal areas along Hwy 1 mirror those of central California south of San Francisco.
Nestled in the heart of downtown Geneva is a little piece of Mexico, and we do mean little. We received an email recommending this restaurant from a Mr. Pon, first name Grou. It was a Groupon, get it? We crack ourselves up! The name of this place is Sergio’s Cantina.
You might not be able to see the forest for the trees, but you can see the downtown Huntley square. Last month, the Village of Huntley removed seven of the eight trees decorating the downtown area, according to Barbara Read, Village of Huntley Management Assistant.
If you are a believer, this is at least a three star movie. If not, you may still enjoy a look at the greatest story ever told. The set designs, costuming, and cinematography are all outstanding, to say nothing of the realism created by director Kevin Reynolds.
In the last issue, I gave you the two most common causes of water accumulating in the tub of your dishwasher along with the fix for each. The first was the deterioration of the neoprene poppet on the end of the piston that diverts the flow of water to the pump. The second was a clogged drain hose. In this issue, I will explain the third possible cause: an inoperative float switch.
My mother started having anxiety and had to be hospitalized for this. She is 82 and I have noticed she is not “herself” since the anxiety surfaced in her life.
Letters for the week of February 25.
Several weeks ago, I told you what an idiot I was when it came to the stupid things that leaped from my mouth when I met celebrities like Meadowlark Lemon and James Brown. It was a simple bumbler’s confession, and I thought that would be the end of it.
For several hours a week, I work at the Huntley Library re-shelving items. During this process, opportunity presents itself for me to peruse materials I’d not see while looking on my own. Very often I say to myself, oh, that looks interesting … and then I keep it or jot down the info. I’ll share some with you that pique my interest.
To everything there is a season, especially for true love. Here, then, is the love story of Esther and Doug Kenning, high school sweethearts.

Although most of you know me as the Assistant Editor here at the Sun Day, I will confess: I may be an editor by day, but I am a public library employee by night. And if you are picturing a quiet, dusty, book-filled building complete with librarians and card catalogs, think again.
The Riffner family vacation trip last year was truly a team event. It was initiated by one team, but it ended up with two.
The AARP Magazine’s October/November 2015 publication gives us a multitude of tips on how to forestay the threat of four major diseases as we age. Healthy aging is based on combating these four major debilitating players of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. In my two-part article on the subject, I repeat most of the magazine’s latest and critically extensive research summarized by Robin Westen and Joe Kita.
The problem of high school students parking on Sun City streets has escalated somewhat recently and has prompted a special meeting among students, parents, and the Huntley Police Department.
Letters for the week of February 11.
As everyone knows, Huntley is growing by leaps and bounds. A census is currently being conducted where we are expected to go over the 25,000 mark. That is hard to believe when you consider Huntley had just over 5,700 people in 2000. The recent roadway improvements to route 47, including the 90 interchange has opened even more doors to business and additional home construction.
My dishwasher is not getting the dishes very clean and there is about two inches of water in the bottom of the tub. Can this be fixed or do I need a new dishwasher?
Whenever I used foul language when I was a kid, my grandmother Nani would sit me down and explain, “People who use words like that are too ignorant to think of a better word. You’re not ignorant, are you?”
Unable to get to the theatre because of travel plans, I submit to you a list of really great films to watch via On Demand, Netflix, or your favorite streaming service.
