Driving through cold weather is just fine by me, that’s no joke

I’ve written a lot of different material that covers a broad spectrum of categories, during my career. I’ve dabbled in everything from fiction to non-fiction, including ghost writing a chapter on China’s copper usage and how it impacted the stock market for a book on market analysis, which, by the way, was way outside my area of expertise, and I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. But I pulled through, as I usually do on writing projects because I’m pretty decent. Not great, but decent. What I’m not decent at is writing jokes.

Poor sidewalk conditions at Factory Mall account for SC resident fall

Seven months ago, the Sun Day wrote about the Huntley Outlet Center, the deteriorating condition of its infrastructure, the vacancies in most of its spaces, and the declining interest among Sun City residents in shopping at the facility. We reported on uneven and cracked sidewalks and the potholed and cracked, mostly empty parking lot.

Help wanted

Your Community Radio Station has been broadcasting on 101.5 FM for nearly six months, and we’re getting busier and busier. By May, we’ll have 44 shows and more to come. And that’s great…but while there’s a lot to do, we just don’t have enough volunteers to get some of the jobs done.

About 12 years ago, Sun City’s Neighborhoods 27 and 28 were designed and built out. That design included construction off a large flood-control detention pond located behind homes along Windsor Drive.

A stone’s throw off I-90 at Route 59, about a half-mile north as the eagle flies, is a restaurant in Hoffman Estates known as Stone Eagle Tavern. (Notice how cleverly we tied that altogether? Boy, we’re good!)

Time to gas up and tour your yard

I am responsible for the maintenance of 4 vehicles. They range from a 1995 Chevrolet pickup truck to a 2013 Honda Odyssey van. Three vehicles for business use, one for personal. Because several of the vehicles have not been driven in 4 months, I have spent the past few days, having them cleaned, filling them with fuel, making sure the insurance and registration papers are accurate and checking to see if they need to have an oil change.

An Easter basket case

Diane Naples was going to give up. Though she had already dedicated 15 years to creating Easter baskets and donating them to children in need, health issues sidelined her this year and, as she put it, “I just haven’t gotten back to my old self.”

I’m almost 37 and my feet are becoming pickier than a toddler’s eating habits. Shoe shopping is a Goldilocks state in which I can be found standing in an aisle, slightly adjusting my weight on mismatched shoes, with a look of severe consternation on my face. Picking the right shoe has become a tight balancing act of comfort, style (which I care little about), and budget (which I care a lot about).

For the love of the animal

Over the past year, former Sun City resident Jess Chipkin has become increasingly aware of what happens to animals living on large factory farms. Enter Crate Free Illinois, a nonprofit organization that Chipkin is in the process of forming. The Illinois-based group has a focus on animal welfare on factory farms, and the group’s goal is rather straightforward.
