McHenry County Visitors Bureau moves to Huntley

In order to expand its visibility in the northwest suburbs, the McHenry County Visitors Bureau has chosen to come to Huntley.

A Valentine’s Day bonanza for charity

For the seventh consecutive year, Sun City’s Stingray Swim Club celebrated Valentine’s Day. This year the festivities actually were held on Feb. 14.

Census to take place in Sun City this year

When the first active-adult community opened in Arizona in 1960, a new housing concept was born. The facilities were offered exclusively to persons aged 55 years and over. Many of them, like Sun City in Huntley, provided activities and services specifically designed for seniors.

The latest burglary in Sun City was accomplished by lifting the sliding glass door up into the upper track enough so that the lower edge could be swung out, clearing the lower track. This is the reverse of how the door was originally installed. This can be eliminated by closing that gap above the sliding door. A wooden dowel slipped into this gap can prevent the door from being lifted out.

Huntley High School to Go Bald for Childhood Cancer

Students and staff of Huntley High School will host two events on Friday, March 13, to cap their fundraising efforts for St. Baldrick’s during the months of February and March.

In memoriam: Virginia “Ginny” Winkelstein

Virginia “Ginny” Winkelstein, age 71, of Huntley, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 21 while at home. Ginny was born on July 1, 1943 in Elgin, the daughter of Virginia and Ellis Bilisoly. She graduated from Elgin High School in 1961 and then earned her RN degree from Copley Hospital in Aurora in 1965. After graduation, she worked at Rush Presbyterian hospital.

B’gosh and begorrah…an Irish boxty!

It’s that “magically delicious” time of year again. A time when pseudo Irishmen turn the color of shamrocks from drinking too much green beer and the aroma of cooking cabbage permeates the air. We are referring, of course, to St. Paddy’s Day. The Dining Duo celebrated early at the McNally’s Traditional Irish Pub in St. Charles.

Easter egg hunt party

The annual Grandma, Grandpa & Me Easter Egg Hunt Party will be held on Sunday, March 29, from 1-3 p.m. at the Meadow View Lodge. Tickets will be sold outside the Multi-Purpose Card Room at Prairie Lodge on Wednesday, March 18, from 6-7 p.m. If you haven’t already paid your dues, you may do so when you purchase your tickets.

Ron Johnston is a Sun City resident who is giving new meaning to the phrase “on call.” Ron is not a doctor, cop, or first responder. He is a fulltime staff member of the association. He is in charge of APN neighborhood landscaping, snow removal, and…mailbox services.

Man misses ride on Siberian Express

I admit it. I’ve had my nose buried in outside writing projects the past week and haven’t been paying much attention to news beyond Sun City and the Huntley area. Maybe not even beyond Sun City. Perhaps I should count myself lucky I’ve been bundled up in a world of fiction; otherwise, my said nose might have caught a serious case of frostbite when the Siberian Express cold front swept through, which I missed entirely.

Ride-sharing program begins March 2 for all Huntley residents
