What happened to nickel fines and ‘get it next time?’

For somebody who writes fiction and is addicted to reading, I find character arcs mostly phony. They’re a necessity, sure. But no matter how many times I get tingly seeing Ebenezer Scrooge drop that coin out the window, I ultimately think character arcs are fluff. Who changes their entire outlook on life in the space of night, pushy ghosts or not? I’m certain if the story kept going, by March Scrooge would be back to penny-pinching Cratchit once he put the ghost of Christmas Future safely in the past.

How does the Sun Day’s editorial content stack up?

I recently had a spirited conversation with a Sun City resident in regards to the Sun Day’s content, specifically its blend of content. It was the caller’s opinion that the Sun Day doesn’t report enough Sun City items that would be deemed “news” or more accurately “hard news.”

Ladies luncheon donation

On December 9, Kathy Sapko, from the Royal Atwoods section of N-3 in Sun City Del Webb, hosted a Ladies Christmas Luncheon. Approximately 30 women attended, and instead of exchanging gifts, it was decided that the ladies would make a donation to the Grafton Food Pantry of women’s personal items that the Pantry had suggested.

This year has been a roller coaster, to say the least. New jobs, new friends, loved ones lost and gained. The list goes on and on and on and on. Since this column represents my last piece in 2014, and given that Thanksgiving has just come and gone, what a better way to encompass this year and thank those who helped me get here.

Lions and Tigers and Elephants … Oh My!

Well, lions and tigers definitely, but not bears were spotted on Walter and Carol Roth’s recent African safari that included 3 countries: Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. Replace bears with elephants, throw in an animal cracker box menagerie of other species, and you get a better picture of their adventure.

Nancy P. Shadle of Huntley passed away peacefully on November 12, at Journeycare Hospice in Woodstock. Nancy was born in Des Moines, Iowa.
