MY SUN DAY NEWS
The latest burglary in Sun City occurred in the 13000 block of Farm Hill Drive in Neighborhood 1. But this one had a new wrinkle.
Picture it. It’s Valentine’s Day and you’re dining out with someone special. Suddenly, a traditionally attired barbershop quartet appears at your table, presents your companion with a silk red rose and a personalized card, and bursts into song. Enter the Fox Valley Men of Harmony.
Change is weird. I mean, it’s something we all go through, since it’s a natural part of life, but it’s still weird.
For close to two decades, Arvind Shah has been doing something that the majority of us probably do not enjoy: filling out taxes.
The latest break-in information in Sun City provides both good and bad news.
The State of Illinois is not paying some of its bills on time, but School District 158 in Huntley is.
Have you noticed love is in the air? Why? Valentine’s Day is coming, and we at HCR want you to know that we love you! Yes, you, our loyal listeners. Since we now are on 101.5 FM, there are more of you to love. We keep hearing that you like our programming. That’s great.
Overweight predisposes individuals, especially seniors, to a multitude of illnesses and health catastrophes! It isn’t surprising then that recently 13 active Sun City residents revealed among their top 2015 New Year’s Resolutions: Weight Control.
Water keeps dripping down the copper tube on the side of our water heater onto the floor. Is this a problem or is it normal?
I once admitted publicly that I had “never seen a Kevin Costner movie I didn’t like.” My perspective on him hasn’t changed after seeing Black or White, but admittedly this is at the lower end of my “Costner scale.”
Jim and Nancy do not disclose the fact that they will review a restaurant before they attend, ensuring their reviews are unbiased and uninfluenced by their position with the Sun Day.
OK, so the days are short and the nights are long. It’s winter, after all. But look on the bright side: The solstice has passed, the wee days are creeping slightly longer, the groundhog has spoken, and before you know it the long lazy days of summer will be here!
Q. My wife recently passed away. As my health began to decline, she became my caregiver and she helped me tremendously. I want to retain my independence, and I am skeptical about asking for outside help. What can I do to help myself?
Letters for the week of February 12.
Jack and Helen Anderson have more than 50 years of service combined, yet there’s no sign of them slowing down. The two currently serve as the secretary and president of the Lions Club of Sun City – Huntley, respectively. “The Lions has always been a family thing,” says Helen. “It’s something we can do together, and it has been a lot of fun.”
There are very few things out there that make me want to crawl out of my skin. The oddest among them is running a hand over wallpaper. To me, it’s the equivalent of running a fingernail over a chalkboard. Until a month ago, worms were not my list of Things That Make You Go Ugh. But one intestinal parasitic infection later, and the idea of worms makes my skin crawl.
Friends and co-workers remember Jim Van Fleet for his love of the community, as well as his service to Sun City. “He used his business background to help in the decisions he made for the good of the community,” said Linda Davis, vice president of the Sun City Community Association of Huntley board of directors.
Jim Van Fleet, a friend to many in Sun City and respected community leader, ran out of time on the morning of Jan. 12. Jim devoted the time he was given on this earth and in this place to loving his family, earning the respect of his neighbors and friends, and devoting countless hours to community service. What better way to devote a lifetime? Jim lived a life of giving rather than taking.
Several weeks ago Warner Brothers released American Sniper>, which set seven box office records in its first weekend. This is also based on true events, the story of Navy Seal Chris Kyle and his four combat tours in Iraq. It also features a battle of wits between Kyle and an Iraqi sniper who has killed a number of Americans.
While some methods of weight loss might mean putting down the fork, other times it’s a matter of going under the knife; but at what cost? According to Dr. Heydari Amir, the decision to undergo weight loss surgery is a complex one.
It’s January, the month when many Sun City seniors make their New Year’s 2015 resolutions! According to Suburban Senior’s Magazine (December 2014 to January 2015), “… a recent study found that 22 percent of people give up their resolution(s) within the first week. By the end of March, more than half of the people pledging New Year’s resolutions had fallen from the bandwagon.” How can we then make promises to ourselves that are practical and worth keeping, especially to help our body and mind health?
All the excitement of the holidays are over and here we are in the middle of the “winter doldrums.” But we at Huntley Radio are all excited about the new shows we have added to our schedule and the other new shows that are currently being developed.
Sun City has recently launched a new in-house recycling program in collaboration with Huntley Waste Management that is already being implemented.
Now that the modern-day Bonnie and Clyde teen fugitives have been caught, parents across the nation are no doubt sitting their adolescent children down and wagging their lesson-loaded fingers in their faces.
I promise this is the first, last, and only review where I will use the words “Wow, this movie blew my mind.”
Letters for the week of January 29
I have a Traverse Bay, which I moved into on 3-9-2000. The door handle on the front door has been giving me problems. When I press the door lever with my thumb to open the front door, it sticks and is hard to open. It has been that way for years but seems to be getting worse. I am afraid someday I won’t be able to get in the house. The brand is a Weiser, and everyone I talk to says it has been discontinued. Do you have any suggestions as to how I could fix it or get another handle and lock to replace it?
Get your motor runnin’, head out on the highway. Looking for adventure…. Easyrider? Born to be Wild– Steppenwolf? Peter Fonda’s theme song? Well, maybe not but close when you talk with Herb and Jacqueline Pitzman (Neighborhood 7) about their motorcycle tour of Europe.
News briefs for the week of January 29.
Q. What can I do to keep from getting the flu? I did get my flu shot, but a few of my friends have gotten it, even though they were immunized.
