Gooooood morning, Huntley!

Huntley Community Radio, which for the last two years has been broadcasting over the Internet airwaves, has received its low-power FM license from the Federal Communications Commission to officially broadcast as WHRU-LP on 101.5 FM, turning what was once an idea for co-founder Allen Pollack into a reality.

Can I buy a foul, please?

I think if you’ve been reading Happy Trails for any length of time, you’ll know I’m pretty vanilla in both my writing style and subject matter. I basically write stuff that’s suitable for any age to read, which, for the most part, is good advice, if not for any other reason than it’s more marketable. But I’m going out on an editorial limb in this edition and am writing about swear words. I’ll mask them (It’s Halloween soon, after all), but no matter how many of these @#!% I put in, we all know a swear word when we see it.

Resident Reporter: October 23, 2014

On Oct. 10, Neighborhood 18 (Monarch Ridge) celebrated their 10th year as neighbors. Known as The Neighborhood That Cares, approximately 90-plus residents attended this special event in the Drendel Ballroom. Our Activity Committee planned this special event, inviting all our neighbors and included former neighbors who lived here and moved.

As Halloween approaches, the Grandma, Grandpa and Me Club make their preparations for their annual Halloween party. This year, the party falls on Sunday, Oct. 26 from 1-3 p.m. at the Fountain View Center.

Voices that carry

The Prairie Voices will celebrate their 10th anniversary with a special concert on Monday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. in the Drendel Ballroom. This ensemble of accomplished singers gave their first performance on Aug. 25, 2004, on the same stage. The original group of 12 singers has grown over the years to 23 members.

Huntley business continues to rise

Remember the Hollywood movie star pictures in the former Powell’s car wash on Route 47 in Huntley? As you waited for your vehicle to be cleaned, you could reminisce at pictures of Marilyn, James Dean, Bogie, Elvis, etc. Powell’s has been gone for more than a year, and we miss the cinematic nostalgia. But is it possible that another film revival is coming to this site?

Matt Damon became a close friend of Robin Williams after the well-loved comedian promoted the making of the 1997 American movie drama “Good Will Hunting” written by Matt and Ben Affleck and starring all three actors. On September 25, Mr. Damon chose to engage in an interview with Katie Couric, anchor of Yahoo Global News, on the subject of suicide and its accompanying depression responsible for Mr. Williams’ death.

Breakfast with Santa

The annual Grandma, Grandpa & Me Breakfast with Santa will be held on Sunday, December 14 in Drendel Hall. The Breakfast Buffet is provided by Jameson’s. In addition to visiting with Santa, we will have entertainment and Holly Veach will once again be taking pictures. There are two seatings: 9-10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are $16 adult (14 and over); $8 children ages 3-13; and children 2 and under are free, but still need a ticket.

Munch a Bunch of Brunch

The long awaited, much anticipated Brunch Cafe is finally a reality. It opened it’s doors on Oct. 7 to satisfy the brunch cravings of the good citizens of Huntley.

In the last column, I addressed the trials and tribulations of being the mom of a 16-year-old young woman. While, the disagreements have subsided, we are now in the process of exploring college options. A road trip is planned to South Bend and West Lafayette, Indiana, a weekend getaway to College Station, Texas is scheduled, and a we will be attending yet another seminar at Elgin Community College regarding College Preparedness.

Happy Birthday, Huntley Community Radio!

Two years ago, on Sept. 28, 2012, Huntley Radio (HCR) began streaming on the Internet 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It trained local residents and school and college students in the art of broadcasting.
