Make your garden perennially colorful

It seems we all want the most out of our purchases. Weather it is a Diet Coke filled up to the very top, a new appliance that runs more efficiently than the old one, or a cell phone that is also a calculator, gaming device, and weather predictor. Throughout the summer I have spoken to many homeowners that are requesting perennial flowers that have flowers on them for several months.

My first car

During my first and second years of attending the U of I (Navy Pier) in Chicago, (long before the U of I Circle Campus constructed), I used the CTA, (Chicago Transit Authority) from my parent’s home near Belmont Ave./Elston to Howard St. (elevated), to Grand Ave to the Navy Pier. It was really a drag, especially in winter.

How Sun City residents help us remember 9-11

Sept. 11, 2001, happened 13 years ago. It was something I’ll never forget, but it was 13 years ago and we do tend not to remember. Well that was exactly what Sun City residents, Margaret (Peg) Mulhall, Linda Bahwell, and Catherine Portera will not let happen. On Sept. 11, 2011, they created the first 9-11 American Flag Memorial event with help from friends.

Meramec Caverns

Meramec Caverns, approximately 1 hour outside Saint Louis near Stanton, MO, get visitors from all over the world because of its “young and growing” cavern system. Nestled in the Meramec foothills, the natural cave system was carved from the limestone bedrock deposited by the inland sea approximately 100 million years ago.

My daughter holds those around her to very high standards. She has the same standards for herself. As her mom, she expects me to fill out school forms promptly (this is not an easy task, I might add), keep the household running smoothly, and provide love and guidance when needed.

Five things to do this month

The best sweetener of all

Stevia is a small herbaceous shrub, about 20 inches tall, native to Paraguay and Argentina. The leaf is 25 to 30 times sweeter than sugar cane. Used for generations by native Guarani Indians as a sweetener for food and drink, it was not discovered by civilized man until 1899.

Truck accident likely cause for Wildflower Lake incident

Who would think that a truck accident on an interstate highway could contaminate a pond about three miles away? This is what may have happened in the Huntley and Sun City areas late last month that has apparently killed a large quantity of fish in Wildflower Lake and shut down public access to the lake and nearby streams since July 29.
