Who’s who

Every face in the 2014 Sun City association board of directors election is a very familiar one.

‘It’s been really positive so far’

In the close to three months since Kym Brunner sat down with the Sun Day, she has seen the publication of two novels, a handful of events celebrating said releases and already has plans to write a few more.

Roundup of the community association town hall meeting

Age restrictions in Sun City, parkway trees, the recent fish kill in the community’s lake and streams, street lights, and home sales were the main topics at the most recent community association town hall meeting in Drendel Ballroom.

Swimming up stream towards a longer and healthier life, part 3

A tempura and teriyaki treasure trove

Some people think that a restaurant critic’s life is an easy one; we beg to differ. You have to research new venues, try to find them, eat extraordinary amounts of food, write about it, and then diet the rest of the week. Then along comes the next issue, and it’s “Déjà vu all over again.” Every once in a while, however, our efforts are rewarded.

Boots on the ground are better than oafs in an office

Somewhere in America, there is a college with lawns so green and perfect that no student would think of setting foot off the sidewalk to crush so much as a single blade of grass.

Boyhood: An unusual look at life

This is an extraordinary film and in many respects worthy of the four star accolades awarded it by most main stream movie critics. Unfortunately Richard Linklater, the creator, writer and director, chose to stuff the story full of unneeded, unnecessary, and useless profanity, which, for many, will diminish this otherwise brilliant piece of work.

Meramec Caverns

Meramec Caverns, approximately 1 hour outside Saint Louis near Stanton, MO, get visitors from all over the world because of its “young and growing” cavern system. Nestled in the Meramec foothills, the natural cave system was carved from the limestone bedrock deposited by the inland sea approximately 100 million years ago.

Like having a gardener on speed dial

My daughter holds those around her to very high standards. She has the same standards for herself. As her mom, she expects me to fill out school forms promptly (this is not an easy task, I might add), keep the household running smoothly, and provide love and guidance when needed.

Five things to do this month

Many of the Woodchucks, besides being competent woodworkers, have plumbing, electrical, and general maintenance skills. Four years ago, we decided to share those skills with Sun City residents through a column in the Sun Day newspaper. The column you are now reading is our 100th.

The best sweetener of all

Stevia is a small herbaceous shrub, about 20 inches tall, native to Paraguay and Argentina. The leaf is 25 to 30 times sweeter than sugar cane. Used for generations by native Guarani Indians as a sweetener for food and drink, it was not discovered by civilized man until 1899.

When it comes to writing, the inspiration is key

Here’s one thing you may not know about me: I’m a published author. Granted my name has been on hundreds of articles over my career with journalism, that is not what I am referring to. I’ve actually written a book — two, actually.

Truck accident likely cause for Wildflower Lake incident

Who would think that a truck accident on an interstate highway could contaminate a pond about three miles away? This is what may have happened in the Huntley and Sun City areas late last month that has apparently killed a large quantity of fish in Wildflower Lake and shut down public access to the lake and nearby streams since July 29.

Sound bites on current Sun City issues

The news from Sun City’s community association these days may not be resoundingly exciting, but it is productive.

Main street bridge re-opens, new traffic signals

The McHenry County Division of Transportation is pleased to announce the bridge rehabilitation work is complete and Main Street has been re-opened to traffic.

Swimming up stream towards a longer and healthier life, part 2

Let’s review what was mentioned in Part 1 of Swimming’s Health Benefits, in reverse order of importance: 10) The Ability to Recover from Health Issues through Bearing Only 10% of Your Body Weight in the Water; 9) The Increase in Muscle Tone and Strength; 8) Improved Flexibility; 7) A Healthier Heart. In addition to Joe Loughlin’s quote, let me add two more testimonials for the sport of swimming’s ability to strengthen one’s most important muscle—the heart.

Honey, in its raw, unfiltered, unheated, unprocessed state is a good food used sparingly. It is a food containing natural antioxidants, enzymes, and amino acids—along with other nutrients.

The Hundred-Foot Journey – a trip worth taking

It’s been a while since I walked out of the theatre with a smile on my face, but it was hard not to after watching this one. Steven Spielberg’s 51st movie continues his remarkable streak of terrific films, and while this one may not rival his mega hits, it is a solid evening’s entertainment.

Inspiring minds want to grow

When I was in fourth grade, our teacher, Mrs. Crane, used to read to us every afternoon after recess. One afternoon, she read a story called “The Last Leaf” by O. Henry. In the story, a woman named Johnsy is stricken with pneumonia and lies dying in her hospital bed. Her bed faces a window and on the brick wall outside her window is a vine.
