MY SUN DAY NEWS
Since 2010, Sun City has welcomed the Huntley High School singing group Project 2 into the community with high enthusiasm and positive feedback. Now, three years later, Del Webb residents will wish them farewell by hosting Project 2’s College Send-Off show.
Sun City’s economy, like the national version, slid downward and suffered in 2008-2011. Housing sales, prices, and closings nosedived as local and national real estate markets took a big hit in what will be known as the 2008 recession.
Over the last 15 years, Sun City has partnered with the Village of Huntley, Centegra Health, and Jameson’s, and other food and beverage organizations. All these relationships have enriched the experiences of residents.
When families in Helsinki tune into the pro¬gram “Puoli Seitseman” (“Half of Seven” in English) this fall, they’ll be getting a glimpse into Huntley and a taste of the Sun City lifestyle.
While Johnny Depp or the nostalgia factor could have been the driving force behind an audience member’s decision to see Disney’s “The Lone Ranger,” it was Silver – the masked hero’s trusty horse – that led Amber Bauman, owner of Valley View Acres, to the theater.
From Part 1 of this 2 Part Series, we learned that the blood-thirsty tick is an arachnid (related to the spider and scorpion), who, through its bite, spreads a dangerous form of bacteria. In the Northeastern and Upper Midwestern parts of our country, the resulting illness, Lyme disease, has reached epidemic proportions in recent years.
What is “Project 365?” Simply put, it is a Neighborhood Watch group setting a goal toward correcting a problem area in their community and/or expanding their NW mission. The results should be achieved in 365 days.
I’m sure most of you are familiar with the TV show term “jump the shark.” For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, it’s the moment a TV series slides into the absolute absurd, that point of no return that tells viewers “It’s all downhill from here, folks.”
Gardening can be a very rewarding experience. There are many steps along the way: planting, weeding, watering, fertilizing, harvesting, eating, and preserving. Some steps are more enjoyable than others.
Q.I have been experiencing severe anxiety to the point where I cannot function. I thought I was going to be in relaxation mode in my golden years, but this is far from it. When I have anxiety, I am almost physically paralyzed. I’ve even gone to the emergency room.
Last week we said consuming wrong fats was one of the main reasons for heart and circulatory disease. As we look at the grocery store shelves, we see bottle after bottle of polyunsaturated oils and salad dressings.
Kiku Sushi and Hibachi is a small Japanese restaurant located in a strip mall. To our surprise, it was actually three restaurants in one! It has hibachi grill tables (where they cook in front of you), a sushi bar (with adjoining booths), and a section for “kitchen entrees” (with tables and chairs).
This article marks three years of the Woodchucks answering your questions about repairs around your home. The Sun City Woodchucks would like to meet the people who read the column and show you what goes on in our shop.
Learning facts about one’s hometown can be difficult depending on the resources provided and any documents that may still exist.
Beginning with weekly basement practices and rising to highly anticipated gigs, the Sun City-based Encore Chamber Orchestra continues to take the stage. Growing from six to 15 musicians over the course of eight years, the orchestra has seen a steady upswing, as is reflected in its upcoming performance in Sun City on July 28.
While the Blues Brothers’ most popular hits can be heard blasting from the radio less and less these days, it does not mean they go unperformed. To Sun City residents Carolynn Kleen and Marsha Kapchinski, classic artists such as the Righteous Brothers, Elvis Presley, and even various show tunes, such as “Mama Mia,” are part of a large catalog they find themselves performing several nights a month.
Illinois became the last state in the union to allow concealed carry of firearms, as the state General Assembly voted to override Gov. Pat Quinn’s amendatory veto of a concealed carry bill on July 9.
Remember “Love Letters in the Sand?” “Why Baby Why,” “April Love,” and “Speedy Gonzales?”
Having lived in the Kildeer/Long Grove area for 35 years, I am quite aware of that pesky, bloodsucking, disease-transmitting arachnid referred to as a tick.
One of my favorite movies is Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey.” I love how the film is set in the future (relative to its release in 1968) but looks at the future through 1960s lenses.
We were at home watching T.V. and the phone rang. At the same time, I received a text message on my cell phone from our credit card company. The phone call was also from the credit card company. They were inquiring about a recent transaction on my credit card: a purchase in New Mexico of $500.
Q: I read your article about adjusting my shower temperature. However, I do not have the faucet you talk about. My home was built in 2007, and it is different. Can you tell me how to adjust the temperature with a different faucet?
There are a lot of Mexican restaurants around, but sadly, too few of them have both excellent food and authentic atmosphere. El Meson in Schaumburg is an exception to the rule.
We moved out of our former home when our daughter, Mary, was two and Sarah was five months old. Shortly after that, whenever we would drive down Main Street in Huntley and pass our house, we would say “Hi, old house, bye, old house.”
Close to 75 million Americans suffer from heart disease. Many are taking the Band-Aid approach by having bypass surgery or stints put in. Over the years these can close. We need to take responsibility for our lifestyle.
Q: I am thinking about taking a yoga class, but I am not sure if it is the right form of exercise for me. I am 78.
I went to the Cayman Islands this morning, where I lay on a white sand beach with waves lapping at my feet. Frigate birds soared overhead, and as I drowsed between sleep and wakefulness, I tried to decide if I should grab my fins and paddle out to snorkel the coral reef again or just order another frosty Bahama Mama and wait for dinner at the thatched beach hut.
Riding a bike can be a different activity to just about anyone who gets on one. For some, it’s a way to get out into nature and trek over hilly, rugged terrain. For others, a bike is an eco-friendly way to get to the store. Some like to push themselves to new distances or speeds: those riders would fit right in with the Edgewater pedalers.
Dick Tanney may have never seen combat during his service with the Army, but he’s nevertheless proud of his past.
When the Theatre Company of Sun City was founded in 2003, its initial goal was to provide residents in the area an opportunity to experience musical theater, with two musicals scheduled each year.
