MY SUN DAY NEWS
For nearly four years, Sun City residents living in Kane County have been served by one of their own.
One way to know a town is growing up (or at least expanding) is when it builds a bypass off a main artery to relieve growing congestion at a major intersection.
Alexa Scimeca, the figure skater featured in “A Heart of Gold” back in the Feb. 28 edition of the Sun Day, has done it yet again.
According to the Parkinson’s Dis¬ease Foundation, in 2005, “There were an estimated 4.1 million people worldwide with Parkinson’s disease. In 25 years, that number is predicted to climb to 8.7 million.” The number of people living longer has led to the projection that by 2030, “There may be 80 percent more Americans with the disease.”
It’s late February in Ft. Myers, and I’m at JetBlue Park for the first game of Spring Training between the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays. For true baseball fans, this is the “hope springs eternal” day, as fans come from as far away as Canada to watch grown men play a boy’s game, one that doesn’t even count in the standings.
After returning from several months in Florida, it was time to catch up with three of my grandkids. I invited our 14-year-old twin grandsons, Jack and Nick, along with their sister, Sophia, age 9 (going on 20), out for a special treat: dinner at one of the recently opened restaurants in Algonquin Commons called Jiang’s Mongolian Grill.
Do you know one of the top reasons owners relinquish their dogs to shelters is they claim their dogs can’t be housebroken? It’s sad but true.
Whenever I drive with my husband, he is consistently pointing out schools where he has overseen the construction of gym floors. I notice plants. About 6 years ago I noticed an evergreen tree in early March that I could not quite identify. It had a nice shape, the needles were full and long, but the color was slightly different than the color of any other evergreen tree that I had seen. The tree was planted in the front yard of someone’s home on a well traveled street in Sun City.
One of the courses I love to teach at National Louis University is the Managerial Accounting course in our MBA Program. The majority of students who take this course come in to it needing it to graduate. They don’t share the passion and excitement I have for the course, at least not when they start it. Learning the “jargon” is one of the first challenges in this course.
What defines a man? Is it a full beard, or a sculpted physique? Being able to survive in the wild? A Camaro? The type of scotch he drinks?
A few years ago, Tom decided to visit a friend who was stationed in Germany.
I finally got around to taking my own advice and changed my 10-year-old smoke alarms. Smoke alarms have a 7-10 year life, so if yours are older than that there is a good chance they are no longer working. My original ones were Firex brand model ADC.
Salt in its natural form is referred to as unrefined salt. Unrefined salt has over 80 minerals and has not been altered by man. Natural salt maintains the normal PH of the body, which should be 7.2 or a neutral state.
I am hoping to take a well-deserved vacation early this summer. I take care of my father and am his only caregiver. Do you have suggestions of how I can have peace of mind while I am gone? I plan to be gone for 10 days.
This week I am featuring a man whose music is a favorite of many jazz artists and pop singers — Antonio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim, or Tom Jobim, as he is known in the music world.
Who can say where such memories come from? Maybe a random sound. Maybe an errant smell. Maybe some snatch of words in the morning paper.
From now through April 9, Edgewater residents have the chance to choose the next supervisor of Elgin Township. The role of supervisor includes serving as chairman of the township board of trustees, supervising general assistance programs, and acting as treasurer of township funds.
My good friend (since 3rd grade) Marlene called me from work one dreary Friday afternoon and suggested going for Thai food. Hmm…Roland was out of town…why not? I had never had Thai food before…why not!
According to The Mayo Clinic’s website, our olfactory function declines as we age. The site further states that not only do we lose our sense of smell, we lose our ability to discriminate between smells. It’s called olfactory impairment.
There’s a biblical passage that tugs at the heart of many persons: “Give, and it will be given to you, for whatever measure you deal out to others, it will be dealt out in return.”
Three spots are up for grabs on Huntley’s board of trustees, and there are four candidates looking for a seat.
As a comedian, George Casey has seen the world. Though he calls Branson, Mo. home, the Ireland native, who has been performing his stand-up routine for over three decades, has opened for big name acts in Las Vegas, has been contracted to work cruises for Royal Caribbean, Queen Elizabeth 2, and Regent Seven Seas, among others, and is scheduled to appear in three states during March alone.

Many people have heard of Rosie the Riveter and seen the iconic illustration of Rosie flexing and looking ready to handle any task. But many also do not know the whole story of what Rosie really stands for.
In light of a recent string of scams targeting the older population, Huntley police and members of the Sun City Computer Club are urging residents to be on the lookout for suspicious behavior and want to remind those targeted how to stay safe.
Huntley may be the only town in Illinois where a 55-plus active adult community and a large high school are very close next-door neighbors. Dozens of homes in the Del Webb community back up to the school’s sports complex or massive parking lots.
As previously stated, Parkinson’s Disease, a chronic malady, itself is not yet curable. However, significant findings from research help physicians in treating its symptoms. As PD progresses differently in people, the use of certain medications, exercise/stress-controlled (meditation/mental stimulation) activities, positive attitude, diet, and physical, occupational, and speech therapies have proven to be helpful.
Most Sun City homes have Moen shower faucets. These faucets have a feature called Posi-temp that allows you to set the maximum temperature. The temperature was set on installation so that when the handle is turned all the way counterclockwise, the temperature is ideal for showering.
Fellas, if you’re ever on your way out the house and your wife says you look cute, go change immediately.
This week I am featuring a relatively unknown American vocalist, Eva Cassidy. A few years back, friends gave my wife and me a recording by Eva; we instantly became fans.
Sue and I really enjoy getting away for a change of pace and to enjoy exploring new locations and experiences. We love cruises and trips east to see our relatives, but those getaways are for longer trips and can be a bit costly. So we try to take a number of short trips to recharge our batteries. We were born and raised in the Northeast. The mountains, evergreens, and lakes of the Northeast are still in our blood.
