Antioxidant-rich foods for healthy immunity

Q. My doctor has recommended that I start taking vitamin C to build my immunity. I don’t like taking pills, so I wonder what foods I could incorporate into my diet to obtain the vitamin C that I need, naturally.

Laughter By Paul – January 31, 2013

A young man was walking through a supermarket to pick up a few things when he noticed an old lady following him around. Thinking nothing of it, he ignored her and continued on. Finally he went to the checkout line, but she got in front of him.

All about vibes

One of my favorite instruments is the vibraphone, or vibes, as they are commonly known. Over the years, three performers stand out as the best vibes players ever: Lionel Hampton, Red Norvo, and Gary Burton.

Nine things I would do if I ruled the world

1. I would eliminate child-proof caps on medicine bottles. Who can open them? Kids can. Who can’t open them? Me! I’m tired of waiting for the neighbor’s grandchildren to visit so I can ask them to open my prescription bottle.

Where to get alternative health information

Since we have talked much about statin drugs, I am going to recommend a book entitled “Lipitor, Thief of Memory: Statin Drugs and the Misguided War on Cholesterol” by Duane Graveline, M.D.

Be it swab, syringe or sucker, it’s still a bad idea

There is a painful commercial running on TV these days that shows an illustration of a guy cleaning out his ears with a cotton swab. But because the commercial isn’t selling Q-tips, you can imagine what happens next.

Where do all those dog phrases come from?

I was sitting around the house thinking about my next article when my daughter dragged herself upstairs from her room and said to me, “I am sicker than a dog.” I thought to myself, where did that expression come from? Do dogs typically get sicker than humans? Well, I knew the answer was no, but it made me curious about the origins of some of our most commonly used canine expressions.

Negotiating rates for products and services

In one of our recent neighborhood social gatherings, one of my neighbors mentioned an experience they had with Comcast. They noted that their monthly Comcast bill had increased from December to January. However, they had not changed their level of service or purchased any optional services during the month.

Cooking With The Geezer – Creamy French Onion Soup

This week’s recipe is from a reader who prefers to be anonymous. It’s a great version of French onion soup. Very simple and very good, a little different than the standard version.

Our Place recalls childhood Wisconsin vacations

Since I have been writing this column, several friends have suggested nearby restaurants for review. One of those places is Our Place Restaurant at 889 N. La Fox Street, in South Elgin. This old establishment has a whole lot of character.

Complications caused by couples’ car consolidation

There comes a time in the lives of many living in Active Adult communities when the husband approaches his wife with the following observation:

These days, you’ve got to look straight at them

“These are the days of miracle and wonder.”

-Paul Simon, “The Boy in the Bubble”

The Creekside Cookers get a little cheesy

If Edgewater is mad over manchego and brie parties are all the rage over the next few weeks, it is all because of Creekside Cookers.

Eyes to the Skies

Whether flying model airplanes or launching real aircraft, members of the Aviation Interest Group know it’s never too late to spread their wings.

Huntley Historical Society searching for a home

It may sound like a contradiction in terms, but the Huntley Historical Society is one of the newest and youngest organizations in the community. At three years old, the group has about 75 members, including businesses, couples, and individuals living throughout the Huntley community.

Rehab facility for disabled going up in Huntley

Many inquiries have come to the Sun Day about the odd-shaped building being constructed next to Heritage Assisted Living at Regency Square and Farm Hill Roads, next to the Village of Huntley fire station.

The three-winged building, with the wings extending out in three directions from a central core, is being built by Deerpath Supportive Living Community and BMA Management LLC.

Onstage, Ac•Rock becomes much more than four voices

Since 1992, one Chicago group has taken its four voices around the country, opening for notable names like Martin Short, Wayne Brady, the late Bernie Mac, and Sen. Al Franken.

AS 2013 turns forward, turn the scale backward

Looking to make a life-changing New Year’s Resolution? Here’s a goal we as seniors should all attempt to keep – to strive for maximum health as we age.

Ron Tenggren, the man whom pins fear

It’s bowling night. It’s your favorite sport…join your best friends for friendly competition, relax and enjoy life for a few hours. You’re good enough at it so you can enjoy the competition and the camaraderie. If you have a good game or two and your team wins, it’s a bonus.

New Wellness director Dr. Jared Ko enjoys consulting with seniors

This past August, Centegra physician Dr. Jared Ko was appointed to become Sun City’s new medical director at Sun City’s Wellness Center. The 43-year-old physician earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign College of Medicine and completed his residency from the same medical school in Chicago.

To T.R.’s hair, eat your heart out / Student outgrows teacher

It’s said that students, or some, surpass their teachers. Although the idea is flattering, I’m not sure how this is possible. Granted, the teacher may give up one day on his/her development or a teacher may have a prodigy student destined for pure greatness, but people are constantly learning, constantly growing, and, by and large, teachers are older than their students.

How did the fiscal cliff deal impact seniors?

As we approached the end of 2012, we were all left hanging on the edge of the fiscal cliff, awaiting legislation to prevent us from falling. New Year’s Eve came and went, and we started slipping off the cliff. Finally on the dawn of the New Year, our legislators enacted the Taxpayer Relief Act. Happy New Year!

I can’t take it anymore!

Is it just me? If I watch any more TV that is not hockey, I think my eyes are gonna start bleeding. What’s the matter with the NHL/NHLPA? Don’t they know what they’re doing to me? They’re ruining a critical part of my life. And, yes, I’m taking it personally!

Laughter By Paul: January 17, 2013

The owner of a large store was awakened by his phone ringing at 1 a.m.

Greetings from Edgewater’s Travel Club

When it’s time to put on their traveling shoes, Edgewater residents don’t have to search very far to find adventure and entertainment, both locally and beyond.

Find your way over to Foxtrail for great breakfast specials

As I left the doctor’s office early this morning, I suggested that Roland and I get some breakfast. He immediately thought of a place that he had seen in his travels up and down Route 31, in South Elgin. We arrived at the Foxtrail Restaurant, 800 North La Fox Street, at the front end of a strip mall, across from the Fox River.
