Round up rodeo, yeehaw!

Yeehaw! If you are the grandchild of a member of the Grandma, Grandpa and Me Club, mark March 25 on your calendar. This will be the second year of the Round up Rodeo that will take place at the Meadow View Lodge from 1-3 p.m.

Another option for electrical power

Our electric bill shows up each month from ComEd and we pay it. Since we have been in Sun City, we have enjoyed a consistent supply of power. We have been impressed as to how quickly ComEd gets power restored after storm outages. Of course, we “manage” our electrical usage by turning off lights when not in use and employ other power-saving techniques as we can.

Huntley Community Radio finds home

As Huntley residents sprawl out on patches of grass, gazing up at aerial explosions and licking their dripping ice cream cones, Allen Pollack, N.10, will have another reason to celebrate. If all goes according to plan, July 4, 2012 will also be the birthday of Huntley Community Radio.

Technically, I should have written this edition’s Happy Trails last edition, as that was our active edition over Valentine’s Day, which, by its very nature, topics of relationships are suited to. But remember, I was confused last edition, and Valentine’s was the farthest thing from my mind (yes, ladies, shame on me, I know). However, it’s never too late for matters of the heart.

Cardiovascular diseases remain the biggest cause of deaths worldwide. Heart or cardiac disease is the number one cause of death for both men and women in the United States. It accounts for 40 percent of all U.S. deaths, more than all forms of cancer combined. More than 2500 Americans die from heart diseases each day, equaling one death every 34 seconds. Heart disease cost the United States $316.4 billion annually.

Senior cats for senior people

Are you looking for some unconditional love? Have you thought of adopting a cat? An older cat? The Animal Outreach Society of McHenry County is a foster based, no-kill shelter who has several older cats available for you to select from. They make sure the animals are spayed or neutered and micro-chipped, and for seniors (over 55) the adoption fee is waived.

In these trying economic times it’s comforting to know that there are people willing to help their fellow man. Sun City resident Carol Gates of N.14 is one of these Good Samaritans. She is the senior pastor of Living Waters Lutheran Church and is running a lecture series titled, “Doing Life Together.”

Saying goodbye to Regina Gately

The 2012 Celtic Club’s St. Pat’s Play has been cancelled. The play’s writer, director, producer, and actress has passed away. Indeed, Regina Gately’s title of her theatrical endeavor for this year, “Say Goodbye,” appears to have become incredibly prophetic. How many aspiring actors/actresses did Regina’s plays include? They were too numerous to count. I, for one, was fortunate to have had a “one of a kind experience” when I acted and danced (for the first time in my life) in Ms. Gately’s 2011 mystery play, “Clarisse and the Colonel.”

Fixing a wobbly chair

This is the 10th year the Woodchucks have opened the shop to the community to repair furniture and other wooden objects. This event, appropriately named Ask the Woodchucks, is held twice a year in April and in October. 25 to 35 woodchucks donate a day of their time to repair furniture for residents of Sun City. The most common item repaired is a wobbly chair. We typically fix 18 chairs each time the event is held, or 36 chairs per year.

Good to the last drop

Each morning, the routine seems to be the same. I rise before Sue and get her the first cup of coffee. There is an unwritten rule in our house. No communication transpires before she has her first cup of coffee. There have been very few times in our 41-year marriage that I have broken that rule. When I did, I paid for it.

Christmas Spirit. It can’t be bought; it must come from the heart. I know it is the end of February, but reminiscing about the past Christmas Season gives me pause. I joined the Sunflower Garden Club because gardeners tend to be happy, generous people willing to share knowledge and time.

Niko’s Lodge offers s’more than just good service

Spelling out what TIF could mean for Huntley

Last December, the Village of Huntley approved a study to determine whether or not to designate downtown Huntley a tax increment financing district. The study will examine costs, risks, and feasibility of the process and will give village officials the information to decide whether or not to go through with the plan. The eventual goal for downtown Huntley is to attract new investment by renovating and redeveloping some of the older buildings.
