Tip 13: Water heater

There are two types of gas water heaters used in Sun City. Up until about 2003, an open combustion-chamber water heater was used. Starting in 2003, the sealed combustion-chamber unit, aka Flammable Vapor Ignition Resistant (FVIR), was used. The purpose of the new safety standard is to prevent the ignition of any flammable liquids spilled or stored near a water heater. In the older open-combustion chamber water heaters, the combustion air entered directly into the combustion chamber.

Judy and I were lucky to be able to escape the Blizzard of ’11 by spending January and February in the place we call Disneyland for Geezers, The Villages, Florida. If you’ve never been there, you don’t know what you are missing. I don’t want to turn this into a commercial, but suffice it to say there are over 70,000 full- and part-time residents of this senior community. In my younger years, I used to save the “points” that came inside the Mallo Cup and Peanut Butter Cup candy bars. I can remember cashing in the points for all sorts of prizes. Then there were the prizes inside the Cracker Jack boxes. I would drive my mother crazy at the grocery store “whining” for candy just because I needed a few more points so I could send away for the next prize. Now, many years later, we carry on the tradition with coupons.
