Uneven sidewalk squares present hazard for walkers

A prescription for good health starts with an ability to move your body. Whether you move your body at the fitness centers of Prairie Lodge or Meadowview Lodge in Sun City Huntley, or outside in your neighborhood is your choice. A combination of exercise options can offer a good variety of healthy choices. 

What may complicate these choices are restrictions from COVID-19, the sidewalk repair program, and winter weather. 

Key to reaching herd immunity: ‘Surveillance and containment’

My first article on this topic leaves us questioning “If herd immunity is out of reach, does that mean we’re doomed?”  

Our Wall Street Journal (WSJ) medical authors (Larry Brilliant, W. Ian Lipkin, Lisa Danzig, and Karen Pak Oppenheimer) all answer this question with a resounding “Not at all.”

Big, dumb fun

April has begun; meaning spring showers, love and the start of the blockbuster movie season. I know…I know, it feels too early for that. Can’t we wait for May? With studios getting more anxious, each one sits poised at the starting gate. Executives are eyeing down the track like jockeys ready to bolt with their prize ponies. Theaters are starting to open up more to the possibility of a better summer, although streaming is still on the rise.

My mom is in her early 70s and has been living with Parkinson’s for about four years. Her symptoms have progressed from the mild stage to the more moderate stage. I’ve noticed her shuffling more, and her movements have definitely slowed.

A ‘special’ restaurant

Nancy is what some people might call frugal. I prefer to call her cheap. Of course, this frugality does not apply to jewelry, but I digress. She is on every retailer’s mailing list, and gets hundreds of emails a day with money saving deals, whether we need it or not, if it’s a deal, she purchases it. This strategy has undoubtedly saved me millions of dollars over the years, at least in her way of thinking.

Go ahead, get a little daffy with your spring garden

Last night during dinner I excitedly told my husband about an event that I had recently learned about. I thought it would be something fun for us to do together. He looked at me quizzically “What did you say?” I replied “There is a Tulip festival in Spring Grove! We should go on Sunday, it sounds so fun!” Dejectedly he replied “Oh, I thought you said Tool Festival, something I might enjoy.”

Phasing into a new era

Eager residents have probably kept up to date with each new photo the Huntley Area Public Library (HAPL) posts on their Facebook page regarding the new additions to the library. As of March 15, the library has been closed in order to prepare the old building for phase two which will involve some renovations.

The library paradox

Several years ago, I was invited to speak to Huntley High School journalism students. While I’m fairly decent at public speaking, I’m not very good at talking to students because I’m pretty sure I tell students things about myself teachers really wish I didn’t, like how I (a professional journalist and newspaper owner…of all things) only took one journalism class in my entire life and never graduated college let alone with a degree in journalism. My entire education in news was done on the job.

Pandemic gives way to stronger need for grief group

Grief is a simple word used to sum up a not-so-simple experience. It is as unique as the individual experiencing it. Dealing with the emotions and stress that come with loss can be the most trying thing an individual will ever experience.  

That’s where Sun City’s Grief Support Group comes in.

Board votes to change polling place location

Sun City residents will need to find their new polling place for the 2022 general elections. With a 4 to 3 vote at the March 24 board meeting, the Sun City board decided to not renew the polling place contract with the Kane County Board of Elections for 2022.

Getting my first vaccine was as easy as Rubik’s Cube

Ask anyone who knows me, and they’ll tell you that when it comes to being medicated, I’m nearly a virgin. I pretty much stopped getting vaccines as soon as Mom couldn’t spank me for refusing to get one. I take no prescriptions, and I resist the temptation to pop a Tylenol or aspirin when my back aches or my head starts pounding. I find that Irish whiskey is the cure for (and probably cause of) most of my ailments.

Much more to be done

In its March 27 publication, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) presented “Herd Immunity Won’t Save Us – But We Can Still Beat Covid-19.”  The all-encompassing article was written by medical officers and immunology experts: Larry Brilliant, W. Ian Lipkin, Lisa Danzig, and Karen Pak Oppenheimer. The authors dismiss the fact that “herd immunity” would be an easy plateau to reach.

After a long day, one wants to escape from the world once we turn on our televisions. But sometimes it can be just as rewarding to peer into lives other than our own. Be it a piece of distant history or a current event, the documentary can be just as entertaining as it can be informative.

Petscaping your garden

A member of our family is struggling. Our ever faithful, tail wagging, four-legged protector is struggling. At fourteen years of age, she regularly spills her food dish, getting up the stairs is a struggle, and playing catch is something she can only dream of these days.

My wife and I are in our late 80s and have received both doses of our COVID vaccine. Our adult children, in their 50s and 60s, have also received their vaccine. We also have grandchildren that live in the area. However, they are not yet eligible to receive the COVID vaccine.

Forging fast friendships

When Huntley High School teacher Renae St. Clair paired her Medical Academy students with Sun City pen pals last fall, she had one goal in mind: to foster the critical skill of being able to converse with a stranger.

The result? Mission accomplished. The evidence? Those strangers quickly turned into friends.

Who can say why some people do the things they do, and what value they place on worthless items that would be nothing but trash to any sane, sensible man?

Take a gander at my cluttered bookshelves sometime and you’ll wonder what possible value some of the items there could have to any sane, sensible man. The answer is “none,” but then we’re not talking about sane and sensible in this case, I guess.

The running man

Todd Kane loves to run. He has not missed a day of running since July 1, 2015. On January 1, 2021, Kane gave himself a challenge.

“I gave myself a project. I wanted to run past all 5400 homes in Sun City, covering all of Sun City’s 97 miles of paved roads and trails, Wildflower Lake and Meadows,” Kane said.

Renovated Clayground reopens

It’s eerily quiet walking from the Fountain View Lodge to the Drendel Ballroom during the Covid-19 restrictions. The meeting rooms are dark, the Prairie Lodge fitness center equipment is strangely statuesque, and the fireplace in the Library is lit, but no one is there to enjoy it.

The exception to the rest of the hallway is the Clayground and Ceramics Studio.
