The May 24 Sun City Board meeting was held in the Birch room of the Fountain View Lodge. Fewer than 20 residents were in attendance, and an additional 34 were viewing the YouTube video broadcast at the beginning of the meeting. The YouTube audio experienced some technical difficulties.
I, like so many teenage girls who lived in the 50s through the 60s, welcomed our rich bronze skin tans as a sign of a healthy glow. Indeed, we lathered our skins with a baby oil and iodine mixture aided with the use of a tin foil plate placed under our chins to gather even stronger sun rays reflected onto our faces!

For most of 2020, all of our normal routines have been disrupted to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. In Sun City, clubs were on hold and allowed for minimal interaction with their members. Recently, clubs and sports have started to return to Sun City. The parking lot is full of eager tennis and pickleball players.
Recently, Chris’ mom stayed with us for a few weeks. We each did our own thing during the day. She spent time resting while recovering from a medical procedure and Chris and I worked. Our evenings were filled with listening to wonderful stories about her childhood, intense scrabble games and fun rummy card matches. It was truly a joy to have her in our home.
Summer is upon us once again. With it comes the expectation of long sunny days and starry nights. Time will have to be filled with all the fun and frivolity this year has to offer. And there’s only just so much running after the ice cream truck one can do. This means going back to theaters for the blockbuster season.
May is not a good month for Nancy, especially May of 2021. As you may know, she is President of the Bocce Ball Club with over 700 members. Due to COVID, play was suspended last year and as a result, getting back in the groove was chaotic.
As my husband and I get older, we’ve noticed that we can’t seem to spend as much time out in the hot summer weather as we previously enjoyed. We’re approaching our eighties and have tried our best to maintain an active lifestyle. I enjoy gardening, and my husband enjoys playing golf. We both like to swim in our neighborhood pool and have always enjoyed power walking in the mornings. However, last summer, my husband nearly suffered a heat stroke after our usual morning walk.
Letters for the week of June 3.
This month, Cheryl Mauzer posted something unique on the Sun City Wildflower Lake Facebook page: a picture of a beautiful chalk drawing of Lady and the Tramp sharing that classic strand of spaghetti. “I saw this walking this morning; beautiful chalk artwork. N21. Someone sure is talented!”

For nearly a dozen Sun City residents, piloting a Huntley Community School District 158 school bus means helping students safely reach their destinations. But it also means taking control of their own destinies in a job that puts them in the driver’s seat both literally and figuratively.
At the end of my junior year in high school, my parents moved us from Elmwood Park to Franklin Park. And so, on a Monday afternoon in early May, I suddenly found myself sitting in a classroom in West Leyden High School, having started the day at Elmwood Park High School, clearing out my locker.
In a follow-up to my last column’s story, here is more info on what has led to the catastrophe of Covid-19 numbers and vaccination failures in India and many of the earth’s poorer countries, including China.
Whether they were small, local races or major marathons, Covid cancelled them. But some of the favorite races have gone virtual. Joan Davis recently participated in a virtual run.

With as many streaming services out there, there is no lack of entertaining content. Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max; should we need yet another? Well, the last one we would expect is one from the company who redefined the phone and the watch.

In our last article, we mentioned we tried unsuccessfully to get into a new restaurant, even though it was 5:30 on a Wednesday night. Not to be deterred from her appointed mission, Nancy asked the host to make a reservation for the following Wednesday at 5:30, and he graciously honored her request. Mind you, this is a week in advance and early on a week night. Our anticipation grew as we counted down the days.
Road trips offer the excitement of fun times both at the destination but also during the trip itself. Fancy a road trip out east? Consider heading to Chanticleer Garden, our nation’s premier Pleasure Garden.
Optimism and confidence are slowly replacing fear and despair by COVID wary seniors. This is certainly a departure from months and months of unrelenting stress of a high risk senior population.
Sun City residents may have heard of Senior Services Associates (SSA), but still not be all that familiar with what it is this non-profit does. Beginning in 1973, this non-profit got its start by meeting the needs of community seniors and disabled individuals by offering adult day care at a center in Elgin.
McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) will be hosting a residential electronics recycling event with the help of Elgin Recycling. MCDH has also continued to partner with Paper Tiger Document Solutions for document destruction and The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County for collection of Styrofoam, textiles, and fluorescent bulbs.
My father-in-law recently suffered a stroke. While he was fortunate to live, his life, as well as my mother-in-law’s, has been turned upside down.
Mother’s Day is a celebration of women. And these celebrations don’t all look the same.
What if I told you science and journalism are closely related? Can you hear the screams of doctoral graduates now, expressing outrage? It’s true, students of science tend to have much more work to do that students of writing, but I’m not talking about narrative writing or even narrative non-fiction (which is still fiction). I’m talking about journalism, which is a craft.
