MY SUN DAY NEWS
John and Mary Paule Bierlein never even heard of Huntley, Illinois until they decided to move there in 2008 to be closer to their grown children. Their roots were in Michigan, where they fell in love at Michigan State University, married in 1960, and spent most of their married life and child-rearing years settled north of Detroit. But when their two children, Paul and Lori, wound up relocating and settling in Illinois and southern Wisconsin to start their careers, John and Mary Paule eventually followed. Because they were at retirement age, someone suggested the Bierleins check out Del Webb retirement community in Huntley.

Jennifer Davis of Huntley rode her bicycle across northern Iowa as part of the 52nd Annual RAGBRAI (Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa), with a two-fold purpose.
Davis’ ride of 400 miles raised funds for the Msrklund Home. Marklund Home’s mission, as described on its web site, “is to make everyday life possible for individuals with profound disabilities.” Davis said her late mother-in-law, Anne Davis, started the family’s support5 of Marklund Home, which has Geneva and Elgin locations. Davis donated $500 to Marklund.
With everything going on in the world today, we can all use a good laugh. And not some piece of political satire, such as the likes that South Park have been cooking up. Although boys, keep it coming. The news of Stephen Colbert ending his run on the Late Show hit pretty hard. Gen Z, unfortunately, is where humor goes to die (whatever you do, don’t watch FX’s Adults). No, we need something goofy and a bit irreverent the likes of some ‘90s comedies. I know just the series that comes to mind.
I’m writing this with a half-warm cup of coffee in one hand, a back-to-school supply list in the other, and a growing knot of anxiety in my chest. Back-to-school season is almost here, and I already feel behind. Between organizing my kids’ schedules, getting them to and from activities, checking their homework, and making sure they have clean socks, it’s a lot. But that’s just one piece of the puzzle.
Tolerance is often viewed as a positive characteristic. Most people can recall a situation in their lives in which tolerance played a crucial role. Tolerating my dog, who now chooses to begin needing attention when I am talking on the phone, has become a necessary behavior of mine this summer. Whether we are tolerating an animal or person, tolerance usually allows us to get through a situation more easily.
A while back, you addressed a question about the assigning of numbers to the Sun City Neighborhoods. I have a follow-up question. What went into the naming of the streets here in Sun City and who made the choices?
The Anglers and Grandma, Grandpa, & Me members, along with their grandkids, enjoying an afternoon at the annual fishing derby on July 24 at Wildflower Lake.
Off we went to get our fill, to a restaurant in Cary that’s called Eggville. (Dr. Seuss, eat your heart out)!!!
Summer vacation is soon over, and school will be starting shortly for Huntley children. Some will be lucky to be transported by a special bus driver and Sun City resident, Kristen Lang. Lang has been driving a bus for fifteen years. Most of her career was in Minnesota, where she also trained others to drive a bus. Lang said, “I loved the job and the kids. I left the position because I fell in love and I moved here to Sun City. I was hired here as a bus driver for the Huntley School District. Before I left Minnesota, I wrote a letter to each of my students. It was a sad goodbye. But I love it here in Huntley.”

Avid “Planet Kerth” readers will remember that a couple weeks ago I wrote about the amazing sniffing abilities of the beasts that share this planet with us, from beagles to bugs. You probably clipped it and stuck it to the side of your fridge with a magnet. Go ahead and read it again if you want. I’ll wait.

Age 5: I let him sit in the driver’s seat. He could barely see over the steering wheel, and he made car sounds while he steered hard to the left, then banked hard to the right. He turned every knob on the radio dial, flipped on the turn signal, and startled himself when he turned on the windshield wipers. I snapped a picture of him that day, his smile as big as the moon.

Sun City resident, Ed Piotrowski, is a published author. His current project has been finishing and publishing a book based on writings by his mother. The book gives a glimpse into the lives of two members of the “Greatest Generation,” Virginia and her husband, Eddie Piotrowski. Piotrowski said, “When she was in her 80s, my mother documented the first 30 years of her life, from 1922 to 1952.”

Our little puppy, Rosie, is rapidly approaching her second birthday. We can’t believe how fast time flies; it seems like only yesterday she was a one-and-one-half pound furball. She is now tipping the scale at a whopping eight pounds, but still has that puppy energy. Those who see her walking Jim down the sidewalk will know what we mean. Even the mailman knows her as “that crazy dog.” One of the neighbors, Bob, comes out to play with her and brings a fistful of dog treats. So, in honor of her second birthday, and the fact that we survived the two years, we wanted to treat ourselves to a nice dinner.
I had major doubts when I heard my brother was going to visit Iceland in the middle of the winter. After all, Iceland is located just a few degrees south of the Arctic Circle. But, while they did have warm coats, the weather was fortunately no worse than what we experienced in Del Webb this winter, and they could even bathe in hot springs to get warm, if necessary.
In the US confirmed cases of foodborne illness increased 20 percent in 2024 with 476 related hospitalizations and 16 deaths, double from 2023. Food recalls were up 41 percent due to unsafe foods contaminated with bacteria like salmonella, e coli, and listeria. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in every 6 Americans becomes ill every year from contaminated food or beverages.
Symptoms are generally better treated when there is a diagnosis. This is true whether there is a rash on your hand or brown spots on the leaves of a crab tree. While a dermatologist is the best person to contact regarding a rash, the Plant Clinic at The Morton Arboretum is able to assist you with questions regarding crab trees. The Plant Clinic offers answers firmly based in science about flowers, shrubs and trees.
I’m writing as a husband, caregiver, and someone who’s starting to realize that I can’t keep doing it all on my own. My wife was diagnosed with early-stage dementia last year. For now, we’re managing okay, but the days are getting more complicated. I’m still able to care for her, but I can feel the weight of it building. I’m 76, and while I’m in decent health, I know that I need to be realistic about what I can do on my own.

Superheroes: they have been as old as time if you count Hercules and Perseus of Greek myth. Funny how my audience was treated to a teaser to Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey adaptation during one screening, but that is for next summer. Superman and Fantastic Four are the topics of the day. But rather than review them respectively, I want to take a moment to take the temperature of these two long-running franchises. DC and Marvel are the big dog on campus in the comics landscape. However, I think it is interesting to see them trot out their most squarest of characters.

For a few days, the Coldplay Jumbotron incident captured the spotlight in the headlines, much like the couple captured on camera encircled in each other’s arms, rocking blissfully back and forth to the smooth (and to some, romantic) crooning of frontman Chris Martin. In the Before, they were like any typical couple, enjoying date night on warm July evening at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

My son’s Brittany spaniel is an olfactory wonder. Whenever I go to visit, he dashes circles around my legs, praying to play fetch. (The dog, not my son. That would be creepy.) The yard is filled with fetchable things — chewed up tennis balls, bones, sticks, rubber toys — and all I have to do is choose one of them and give it a toss. Cinder the spaniel dashes off and brings it back.

Just to give you a heads up, this article is going to be very strange. Try to follow along and we will explain it as best as we can.
Music has been a part of film since its inception. Even as silent films ran, an accompanying piano or orchestra served as the soundtrack. But as the years wore on, different genres and artists burst onto the silver screen in a multitude of projects. Many have been complimentary but of their time (Spice World comes to mind.) Others like Mariah Carey’s ill-fated Glitter got panned as vanity projects. And then there is Pavements.
