MY SUN DAY NEWS
When Chris, my husband, and I first started dating I had the opportunity to not only get to know him, but also his parents. I received a front row seat to a lifestyle that was completely unfamiliar to me.
Your garbage disposal will grind up and pass down your drain most of the food waste you put into it, but there are a few items that should never go into it. Egg shells can cause a blockage in the disposal and in the drain. Never put them into your disposal. Celery has tough fiber strands that can wrap around the moving parts of the disposal and make it malfunction.
Things have been “interesting” around the Dining Duo household recently. It is a fun filled “perfect storm”, and we do mean storm. We’re just coming out of the winter doldrums, the weather is not warm enough to venture outside, and Nancy is starting to run out of “happy pills” after her surgery. I have to don an apron and attempt to cook, clean, and do laundry while Nancy turns into a contortionist twice a day with her legs flailing in the air as she does her rehab exercises.
A friend of mine (Janie) and her husband (Bill) live in Seattle. They enjoyed a 3-week vacation in Italy and Greece and agreed to share their adventure. I initially thought – 3 weeks – that’s a long time, but the more I thought about it and remember the time I had spent there, a month in each country wouldn’t be enough. Enjoy.
So it is a new decade of film we are entering. How auspicious this moment is. Not that the major studios really expect usher it in with grand statements of purpose. And why should they? Shallowness and making money is the name of the game.

I’m a senior who was recently targeted by a scammer. I answered a phone call and was greeted by a young gentleman’s voice. He proceeded to tell me that a warrant was out for my arrest because I neglected to show up for jury duty that day. He sounded legitimate and alarmed me for a moment. I panicked while he began to tell me the consequences for not appearing for my jury summons and asked me to confirm my social security number so he could begin processing my arrest.
While you might not be fortunate to spot them ourselves, there could be eagles living right in your own backyard – literally. “In all my life long travels I never saw a bald eagle other than in a zoo until now when this special visitor came and sat in the tree right across my backyard,” said Joan Krecioch, who spotted a bald eagle sitting in a tree in her Sun City yard. Other residents have only hoped to be so lucky.

When Sun City Huntley was built starting in the late 1990s, the theme was, “retire from work, not life.” And that’s still the best description of Sun City that I’ve ever known.
It is no secret that winters in Illinois are brutal. Besides freezing temperatures and unpredictable snowfall posing hazardous conditions for drivers, residents of rural populated areas, including portions of McHenry County, face the added danger of snow drift. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, “blowing snow is the primary cause of icy roads in wind-exposed areas.” Not only do these icy roads endanger motorists, but they are costly to state and local agencies who spend billions of taxpayer dollars on snow and ice control operations.

It must have been rough for those ancient Greeks when they really, really needed something, and they had to turn to their gods for divine intervention in order to get it. After all, those ancient Greeks had so many deities cavorting around Mount Olympus, they made summit day at Mount Everest look like a lonely day in the park.
Alex Schank is a retired firefighter of 30 years, but he continues to help save lives. Schank has served as a ski patroller for 43 years. His dad took him skiing for the first time at age 6. Schank said, “I started skiing regularly in high school and then in college. My wife, Rita, and I went out West during those college years and skied those slopes. I enjoy skiing very much and I started my daughters young.”

As seen in Part 1 of this 2 Part Series on WINTER HEALTH AND SAFETY PROBLEMS, certain unique situations can occur during the Midwest’s long, cold, and dreary weather to challenge our residents’ health and safety. This brief Part 2 will explain a few top safety precautions to take while living in Sun City this season.
Can’t be a surprise all three candidates for McHenry County Coroner believe the Coroner post should remain an elected position. At the recent Coroner’s Forum at McHenry County College, Mark Justen, Angela Byrnes, and Michael Rein confirmed they are opposed to appointment of a full-time medical examiner. A referendum on November 3 asks voters to decide whether the coroner should be elected or appointed.
We were wracking our brains trying to come up with a restaurant to review in the Schaumburg area since we were going there to do some shopping. The light bulb over our heads went on when suddenly we remembered a restaurant that has been around forever, and we have not been to in ages. We are referring to the mother of all calorie bombs, the restaurant with a menu to end all menus, and the ever popular, long forgotten Cheesecake Factory in Schaumburg.
Our Corian countertops have gotten a few scratches over the years. Can these be fixed or is it a very expensive process?
There is nothing more insufferable than a filmmaker who doesn’t allow their movie to breathe, to let us come to certain conclusions naturally. A director inserting themselves into their film, not literally but through their style, is the biggest crime that they can do for their audience. Mostly this is said of flashier action films and big-budget blockbusters the likes of Michael Bay and J.J. Abrams. But sadly this can also be found in smaller art-house films; the works of Lars von Trier and Gaspar Noe come to mind. This same can be said of Fernando Meirelles and his latest for Netflix.
On Wednesday, February 19, the Huntley Area Public Library Board of Trustees held its official groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion and renovation project, for which a $12.9 million bond was approved by voters on April 2, 2019.
I’m an elderly senior who lives alone. I have two daughters who live nearby and pop in as often as they can. However, I recognize that they have their own lives and I don’t want to be a burden to them. I have a few prescriptions that I take, as well as a few vitamins and supplements that my friends have recommended. I’m struggling with managing my medications.

Just a few weeks ago, scientists were hopeful that the new coronavirus would stay within the boundaries of China. Now they know that, at best, its spread can only be minimized. Governments around the world are guardedly planning for the worst scenarios.
I’m not much for daily or “hard” news. It tends to lean towards the negative. Take this edition for instance. There’s a story about the Coronavirus, human trafficking, falls, and a sad story about a family separated by immigration policies. It’s a serious edition. And I agree with its newsworthiness. But while the bad should not be ignored or pushed aside, I believe in spreading positive messages whenever we, as journalists and people alike, can, which is why throughout my career in newspapers, I’ve predominantly been a features reporter and photographer, choosing to focus more on people’s accomplishments than their mistakes or setbacks or less-than-stellar activities.
Lazaro Reynoso, 41, is known in his community in Elgin as being generous and hardworking. The owner of a recycling business, he was frequently known to invite people who were down on their luck to have breakfast with him at a McDonald’s. For the past six months, however, there have been no shared breakfasts at McDonald’s.

As January eases into February and the days inch longer into night, I sit with a drink in my hand and remember winters (and loved ones) past, and last night a winter memory of Dad brought a smile to my face.
Todd Kane, a Sun City resident, had an observation. “Our house backs up to Del Webb Blvd and a day doesn’t go by where I don’t see two or more ambulances and fire trucks go by. Kathy O’Toole, Sun City Fitness Manager, explained that Sun City generates well over 1,000 ambulance calls a year and that a vast majority of them are the result of falls in the house. The EMT told me that, by his observation, that those numbers are directionally correct, maybe even higher. Kathy thinks that anything the fitness department can do to improve strength and balance in our community’s residents would help to reduce those numbers.”

Did you know that seniors run a higher chance of getting health problems in the long drawn out weather conditions of the winter months? These issues might include hypothermia, frostbite, health issues while shoveling snow, falls on ice, auto accidents, and fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. Be prepared to avoid these problems by taking precautions ahead of time.
In this age of “instant” communication, one never knows when or where a new relationship will develop. Some will remain like “pen pals,” (remember those?) but others can grow and form relationships that become very special. This travel story was a result of such a relationship.
You think you know how simple it is to make a choice. You pick the chocolate chip cookie over the oatmeal cookie or you choose to watch one television show over another. Life is full of choices and it seems so simple. However, what appears as “choice” may actually be a form of force or coercion and now you know this article is not about your favorite cookie or TV show.
I have heard I should drain my water heater to extend its life. How often should I drain my water heater?
Calling all Del Webb residents with a passion for reading and children! Several of the Huntley District 158 Schools will be hosting Battle of the Books during March and May, and many community volunteers are needed.
