MY SUN DAY NEWS
Swedish author Stieg Larsson died in November 2004. It took several years for his phenomenally successful trilogy about an unusual young woman named Lisbeth Salander to be published. The books sold 60 million copies posthumously. Lisbeth became an icon to those of us who could not put those books down. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl who Played with Fire, and The Girl who Kicked the Hornetâs Nest, were made into films and went on to gross over $700 million worldwide.
Letters for the week of November 15.
Sun Cityâs own Relay for Life team secured two tickets to the National Golf Club Practice Rounds on April 9, 2019.
Bob Ibach, a member of the Relay team and a cancer survivor, got the tickets for the Cancer Relay for Life fundraiser.
Quick now, Sun Citians, what is a âcoastie?â Chances are, you have to think awhile before you answer. Right now, there are nearly 50,000 men and women in the nation that have this title. They are members of the United States Coast Guard, one of the active branches of the countryâs armed forces. In this year 2018, Coasties, this story is published for you, as we approach Veterans Day on November 11.

Six text messages. Twenty emails from myriad companies. Notices from Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. These are just some of the many ways in which Iâve been inundated in the past month with the timeliest question: Have you registered to vote yet?

Go ahead, call me a Luddite. Itâs not true. Or… well… itâs not completely true. Not anymore.

The proposed 2019 master and APN operating budgets will be published on the communityâs website and in Lifestyles Magazine this week. If approved by the board in December, the budgets will require a $2.00 increase in resident assessments effective on January 1. This would increase assessments from $125 per month to $127 for single-family homeowners.
A potato farmer hired a young man to help him with the harvest. After dumping a truckload of potatoes in the barn, he asked him to sort them into three piles, one for large, one for medium sized and the third for smaller ones. The lad said, âfine, that shouldnât be too hard.â After an hour or so the farmer decided to check back and see how the new helper was doing. He walked into the barn and found him curled up in a fetal position on the floor. Angered at the scene he found, the farmer spoke harshly to the young man, âwhatâs going on, I thought you said this job shouldnât be too hard.â âThe work isnât too hard he replied, itâs those decisions that are killing me.â
In addition to being a convenience and time-saver, driving can also make social or critically needed medical appointments happen. It is definitely a show of independence as one ages. A feeling of loss of self-worth can often occur when âhanging up the keys.â Jonathan Adkins, executive director of the Governors Highway Safety Association, explains: âBeing 75 isnât what it used to be because people are more active and live longer than previous generations.â He continues, âWe want to get away from the idea of taking away mom and dadâs keys and focus on other alternatives to keep them mobile … if they could be driving safely.â

Each year in the fall I spend a day making homemade Christmas gifts. It is a day that I treasure and hopefully brings some joy to the recipients at the holidays. Throughout the years, the gifts and the recipients have varied. One year it was canned pears for all of the adults who were influential in my childrenâs lives.
My father has dementia and is constantly fidgeting and moving things around in his house. This upsets my mom because she feels like she must keep him settled but canât. What can I do to help them at this time in their lives?
Before Nancy and I moved to the sunny confines of Sun City, we lived in Hoffman Estates, which is basically a suburb of Schaumburg. Our days living there included a lot of fond memories, such as when our son played basketball for a church league that was coached by one of my high school buddies. He coincidentally now also lives in Del Webb. After the games, the whole team would often go to a local haunt and “lick their wounds” over a big pepperoni pizza. We decided to revisit this haunt and “go back home” to Riccardo’s Ristorante in Schaumburg.
Have you ever had a personal encounter with perfection? Card games can (very) occasionally provide you with a âperfectâ experience. Take cribbage, for instance. A âperfectâ five-card hand in this game is very special, especially since it is literally a once-in-a-lifetime experience, for only a few people. Pat Pogreba, a three-year Sun City resident, had such a happy moment on October 10.

This column was not written to tell you when to replace your furnace and air conditioner, but rather to tell you how I decided and let you gather facts to make a decision that fits your needs. Replacing a furnace is usually done with different criteria than replacing your car.

On page 2 of the October 18 issue of the Sun Day, a brief item entitled, âballot confusionâ was printed. It reported that on the Kane County ballot in the upcoming Nov. 6 election, there is a proposal for a 1% property tax increase on the fair market value of homes in the county. A majority of Sun City residents live in Kane County.

Sun City Neighborhood 28 continues to âgive backâ to the community with recent fundraisers. An October food drive raised over $1830 and 18 bags/boxes of food items for the Grafton Township Food Pantry.
Ed Slomski, a Sun City resident, had an idea more than 55 years ago that, odds are, you have used in your life time and is still prominent in kitchens and the throughout the food and beverage market today. In 1963, the now defunct American Can Company (Barrington, IL) hired Slomski, as a Development Engineer in their Research and Development Department, and quickly put him to work on a problem they were having a hard time solving.

To find life, you have to face death. Okay, Iâm being dramatic, but what can you expect from someone who recently had the top of his head cut open and his guts spooned out and cooked? No, Iâm not some vile science experiment (unless you call being worked on by a kid with a serrated knife science…uhhh, wait). What I am is a jack-oâ-lantern. And my name is, you guessed it, Jack. You can save the grins. Thatâs my job. Itâs my only job. To grin.

I donât have an Alexa living in my house, but I know several people who do, and whenever I visit them I always come away feeling a bit uncomfortable. I recently went to a family barbecue at a house with an Alexa in the kitchen, and every time somebody asked Alexa a question, my cousin Rich bristled. âI donât like those things,â he said. âI donât want The Man listening to everything I say.â And then he sat sphynx-like at the table, refusing to open his mouth as the rest of us chatted. Alexa just sat and listened, her little lights glowing invitingly, despite Richâs scowling at her whenever she did anybodyâs bidding.

The Sun City Theatre Company proudly presents âSouth Pacific,â coming to the Drendel Ballroom for performances November 15-18. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1949, and has remained a beloved musical ever since, followed by a Hollywood release film in 1958 and many of the songs, such as âSome Enchanted Evening,â âThere is Nothing Like a Dame,â and âIâm Gonna Wash that Man Right Outa My Hairâ earning their place as popular standards still played today.
John and Arlene Angerame are a tour de force, at least when it comes to Chicago. âWe have been doing tours for 7 or 8 years,â said John. The Sun City couple leads historical and literature-based excursions around Chicago. Most recently, they held a âDevil in the White Cityâ tour based on the book by Erik Larsson. The book tells the tale of the Worldâs Columbian Exposition of 1893 and the exploits of serial murderer Dr. Henry H. Holmes.

Can you please educate me on the signs of elder abuse? I am concerned for a neighbor, and I donât know if I need to get involved.
Art Room renovations, Drendel Ballroom hallway washrooms, Wildflower Trail asphalt, roof replacements, and possible use of security cameras were the main subjects of discussion and action at the September 26 meeting of the Sun City board of directors. Here is a roundup of results of these activities.

The Jennifer Lupo theft case in Sun City is nearly three years old. On October 11, it got three months older.
By 2030, more than 60 million seniors are predicted to be driving on our countryâs roads. Already having looked forward to the future of Illinois traffic, a 1990 law was passed by our state legislature on the subject of tighter state driver restrictions for those above the age of 75. In attempting to lower the amount of accidents involving the elderly, Illinois still ranks as one of the U.S. toughest states. Letâs look at its testing rules.Â
I moved into Sun City about six months ago and would like to replace or repaint my faded address numbers. Is there anywhere that you know of that they can be purchased? If not, any hints as to what type of paint can be used for touching up the numbers?
Commonwealth Edison recently hired a contractor to prune several trees in front of the grandparentâs house. A representative from ComEd made a point to stop by and tell us that they would be doing the work the following Wednesday and the trees were clearly marked. One of the men who was supervising the tree trimming also took the time to explain what they were going to do and how they would go about it. These are trees that I drive past many times a day, and I knew that they were going to be pruned.
We have all seen those houses and neighborhoods in Sun City that have a clear love for the Halloween season. Riding around in Neighborhood 17, you will find most of the mailboxes have jack-o-lanterns atop of the post. One home in Neighborhood 17 might be the most festive of all. Addie and Mike Metoyerâs home is decorated for the Halloween season from top to bottom.
