MY SUN DAY NEWS
The blazing, afternoon heat was not enough to keep veterans from taking the field in Sun City’s third annual veterans softball game. Taking place Saturday, June 29, at Eakin field, this weekend event provided attendees a fun experience while working to support a great cause. Event Organizer, Glenn Groebli, has been in charge of running the veterans softball game since 2016. This year, Groebli planned to use proceeds to build a memorial dedicated to all veterans.

Our Sun City home was recently struck by a lightning bolt, and the damage done included some damage to our vinyl siding. Is it still possible to secure siding that will match our current siding in terms of color?
On a recent Sunday morning, I spent a few hours watering the plants at our garden center. Normally I spend Sundays holed up in my office trying to get done all of the work that has piled up on my desk throughout the week. This Sunday was different. I needed to be outside. Frankly, it was quite depressing.
Recently our son and his family came for a visit from the great state of Florida. They have a seven year old son, Henrik, and four year old twin daughters, Ana and Greta. As it is with most grandchildren these days, it seems like they have to be constantly entertained every hour, every minute, every second, of every day, 24/7 during their four day stay.
On June 29, Sun City residents took on the challenge of the Amazing Race. The purpose of the event was to join the charter clubs together in all-club activity.
What should a senior do to achieve optimal bone mass and continue building new healthy bone tissue? Many of the below answers were listed in Part 1 on this topic (Risk Factors that Can Be Changed). However, I would like to reiterate and discuss in fuller detail their importance in Part 2
This is the umpteenth sequel for this franchise, the original with Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst still ranks as the best of the lot, heads and shoulders above this one for sure. Spiderman fans will agree that Tom Holland makes an excellent Peter Parker, just on his good looks alone. However, even he can’t score with a less than mediocre script despite the support of an all- star cast.
I’m starting to feel concerned about my mother’s memory. She’s turning 75 next week and she seems to be more forgetful these days. She constantly misplaces her car keys. She repeats stories about the nuances of her day.
A storm with winds over 60 miles per hour whipped through the northern Illinois area on Sunday, June 30.
Letters for the week of July 11.
Residents showed their community pride by wearing the Sun City 20th anniversary gear to a full day of celebration and entertainment. Saturday, June 22, began with a pancake breakfast by Sammy’s Bar & Grill outdoors at the Fountain Pavilion.
We’ve all been hit with the phrase, the warning shot, the disclaimer: “No offense, but…” Maybe when you hear it, you brace, or roll your eyes, or take a deep, heavy sigh. Either way, one thing is clear: an offense is on its way.

The movie Poms, starring Diane Keaton, is based on a true story of a group of women who form a cheerleading squad at Arizona’s retirement community, proving that you’re never too old to “bring it!” Sandy Oldham, Sun City Resident and tap dance instructor, was inspired.

The “Wall that Heals” will be set up in Randall Oaks Park due to the combined efforts of American Legion Post 679 and True Patriots Care.
The Neil Simon play, “The Odd Couple” comes to life on the Drendel Ballroom stage in July, highlighting the hilarity of two mismatched roommates trying to share a New York apartment with very different standards of cleanliness and decorum.
Today — as with pretty much any other day — I heard our president call American journalists “the enemy of the people.” He says it so often you would think he invented the phrase: “Enemy of the people.” He says it every time he refers to the press, that most American of institutions that our Founding Fathers insisted on protecting when they drafted our First Amendment, the most urgent document of them all, guaranteeing our most important rights that most clearly define what it means to be an American.

In front of Greg Ward’s home, a colorful flag, bedecked in rainbow colors, flies just left of a vivid blue front door. The words Love – Peace – Respect – Pride are emblazoned across the brightly colored flag. Ward has had the flag out two years in a row in June to celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month, which marks the anniversary of the Stonewall riots that occurred in June 1969.
76-year-old Sun City resident Bonnie Archer never expected an average trip to Walmart would result in such an unforgiving nightmare. At approximately 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 30, Archer received a call from an unsuspecting Seattle number.

Special Honoree attendees, all in their 90s, were recognized, honored, and thanked for their service to their country at ‘A Tribute to the Music of Glenn Miller’ concert by the Let’s Dance Big Band.
You are not alone if you have no idea what Mintonette is. It is the original name of the game of volleyball. It was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan. The game was designed to be a combination of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball. The first volleyball net, borrowed from tennis, was only 6’6″ high (people were shorter in the nineteenth century).

The high winds we had 2-3 months ago managed to get behind one of my shutters and break it. With the nice weather, it’s time to replace it, but where do I get a replacement?
A sign with flashing yellow lights that is appearing at more and more crosswalks in McHenry County is meant to alert drivers to stop for pedestrians and cyclists.
With May being the wettest on record and temperatures on the rise, we are bracing for an intense start to mosquito season in Illinois. If weather conditions hold, multiple broods of floodwater mosquitoes are expected to hatch out by the end of June and nuisance levels will be high.
This is the third Toy Story sequel, and as usual, Pixar and Disney join hands providing us with another amazing production.
As you may or may not know, Nancy is President of the Sun City Bocce Club. Every year, from the beginning of May to the beginning of June, it is absolute chaos in the Dining Duo household. There are an average of 12 calls a day with such earth shattering questions like: “did I sign up for bocce ball last year, if so, when do I play,” and the ever popular, “where are the bocce ball courts?”
Having just succumbed to my second thoracic vertebrae (spinal area) fracture in 3 1/2 years, I thought it only fitting to discuss this unfortunately common malady found among seniors. The word, osteoporosis, is derived from the ancient Greek, osteo, meaning “porous bone.” It indicates an increase in size of the honeycombed display of small spaces inside the normally healthy bone. The occupant of the weakened bones may then, more likely through a fall, produce a break or fracture in the hip, wrist, or spinal area.
Recently Christopher, my son, his girlfriend, Celeste and I drove down to Tennessee. Each of us had our own purpose for making the trek. Christopher, as an incoming freshman, was attending the summer orientation for Middle Tennessee State University. This was his chance to register for classes, meet potential friends, and start to acclimate to literally a new climate. It was also important for him to share with his girlfriend where he would be spending the next four years.
As the summer begins to heat up, I’m concerned about my aging parents’ outdoor activities. They enjoy gardening and trail hiking. My dad plays golf at least twice a week. My mom likes to walk around outdoor craft shows and farmers markets. They even attend outdoor summer concerts. While I appreciate their active lifestyle, and by no means want to discourage it, I worry about their vulnerability to heat stroke.
Sew Hop’d Brewery opened its doors in Huntley April 27, 2019. Lance Lamb, one of the partners of the brewery, pointed at a large, three-panel stretched canvas reproduction of Borden’s Dairy building in 1908. “We wanted to remember the history of this structure,” he said. “We found this picture and decided we had to display it.”

Previously I’ve written about my, I won’t say “aversion” to technology, but my general unease about it, which makes me sound like I’m one of those people who think Terminator’s Skynet will someday become a reality and take over the world. That’s hardly the case. Though Siri is a little unsettling sometimes. My unease isn’t so much paranoia but practical concern. Basically, I don’t trust it. It’s not dependable.
