MY SUN DAY NEWS
Sun City Neighborhood 28 continues to “give back” to the community with recent fundraisers. An October food drive raised over $1830 and 18 bags/boxes of food items for the Grafton Township Food Pantry.
Ed Slomski, a Sun City resident, had an idea more than 55 years ago that, odds are, you have used in your life time and is still prominent in kitchens and the throughout the food and beverage market today.
In 1963, the now defunct American Can Company (Barrington, IL) hired Slomski, as a Development Engineer in their Research and Development Department, and quickly put him to work on a problem they were having a hard time solving.
To find life, you have to face death. Okay, I’m being dramatic, but what can you expect from someone who recently had the top of his head cut open and his guts spooned out and cooked?
No, I’m not some vile science experiment (unless you call being worked on by a kid with a serrated knife science…uhhh, wait). What I am is a jack-o’-lantern. And my name is, you guessed it, Jack. You can save the grins. That’s my job. It’s my only job. To grin.
I don’t have an Alexa living in my house, but I know several people who do, and whenever I visit them I always come away feeling a bit uncomfortable. I recently went to a family barbecue at a house with an Alexa in the kitchen, and every time somebody asked Alexa a question, my cousin Rich bristled. “I don’t like those things,” he said. “I don’t want The Man listening to everything I say.” And then he sat sphynx-like at the table, refusing to open his mouth as the rest of us chatted. Alexa just sat and listened, her little lights glowing invitingly, despite Rich’s scowling at her whenever she did anybody’s bidding.

The Sun City Theatre Company proudly presents “South Pacific,” coming to the Drendel Ballroom for performances November 15-18. The musical, scored by iconic singer/songwriter duo Rodgers and Hammerstein, is based on a collection of Pulitzer Prize-winning short stories by author James Michener. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1949, and has remained a beloved musical ever since, followed by a Hollywood release film in 1958 and many of the songs, such as “Some Enchanted Evening,” “There is Nothing Like a Dame,” and “I’m Gonna Wash that Man Right Outa My Hair” earning their place as popular standards still played today.
John and Arlene Angerame are a tour de force, at least when it comes to Chicago. “We have been doing tours for 7 or 8 years,” said John. The Sun City couple leads historical and literature-based excursions around Chicago. Most recently, they held a “Devil in the White City” tour based on the book by Erik Larsson. The book tells the tale of the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 and the exploits of serial murderer Dr. Henry H. Holmes.

Can you please educate me on the signs of elder abuse? I am concerned for a neighbor, and I don’t know if I need to get involved.
Art Room renovations, Drendel Ballroom hallway washrooms, Wildflower Trail asphalt, roof replacements, and possible use of security cameras were the main subjects of discussion and action at the September 26 meeting of the Sun City board of directors. Here is a roundup of results of these activities.

The Jennifer Lupo theft case in Sun City is nearly three years old. On October 11, it got three months older.
By 2030, more than 60 million seniors are predicted to be driving on our country’s roads. Already having looked forward to the future of Illinois traffic, a 1990 law was passed by our state legislature on the subject of tighter state driver restrictions for those above the age of 75. In attempting to lower the amount of accidents involving the elderly, Illinois still ranks as one of the U.S. toughest states. Let’s look at its testing rules.
I moved into Sun City about six months ago and would like to replace or repaint my faded address numbers. Is there anywhere that you know of that they can be purchased? If not, any hints as to what type of paint can be used for touching up the numbers?
Commonwealth Edison recently hired a contractor to prune several trees in front of the grandparent’s house. A representative from ComEd made a point to stop by and tell us that they would be doing the work the following Wednesday and the trees were clearly marked. One of the men who was supervising the tree trimming also took the time to explain what they were going to do and how they would go about it. These are trees that I drive past many times a day, and I knew that they were going to be pruned.
We have all seen those houses and neighborhoods in Sun City that have a clear love for the Halloween season. Riding around in Neighborhood 17, you will find most of the mailboxes have jack-o-lanterns atop of the post. One home in Neighborhood 17 might be the most festive of all. Addie and Mike Metoyer’s home is decorated for the Halloween season from top to bottom.

Outside of family events, there are a handful of dates that are indelibly stamped in most of our memories. December 7, 1941, November 22, 1963, September 11, 2001, and the date this story is about, July 20, 1969. And what an incredible day it was: we won the space race to the moon. The world watched in awe as Neil Armstrong stepped off the lunar module onto the surface and uttered one of the most famous lines in history, “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
While we were scouring the countryside in search of new and exciting eateries, one restaurant in particular piqued our interest. In researching this restaurant we became very confused. Its address is listed as St. Charles. It’s located across the street from Niko’s Tavern and Mel’s Diner in Campton Hills, which we recently reviewed. The website address says Wasco, but the name of the restaurant is Old Towne. So, where is it??? We’ll tell you how to get there, but the world may never know its exact location. We are referring to The Old Towne Pub & Eatery in Wasco.
County staff has presented a 2019 budget and levy for McHenry County that not only further reduces the cost of government, but also returns money back to the taxpayers.
Two Sun City Stingray Swim Club members recently wrapped up their 2018 Senior Games season by participating in the Wisconsin State Senior Swim Olympics. Mark Schark led the charge by winning gold medals for all 6 of his events.
Tall Oaks Tennis Club (TOTC) celebrated a successful tennis season at the team banquet held at the Randall Oaks Golf Club. The guests arrived not in tennis clothes but in Mardi Gras attire. Guests showed up with feathered, elegant, Mardi Gras masks. There was a Mardi Gras King in costume, cape and all. And what Mardi Gras party would be complete without the Jester.

Okay, you hardy Sun Citians, now you have another weather story to tell your grandchildren. Since Sun City opened in April, 1999, there have been two significant weather events that the Sun Day remembers well. On February 6, 2012, Old Man Winter dumped 22 inches of snow on us, shutting down activities for a few days and forcing residents to spend a couple of weeks digging out.

We’ve all wondered what might happen once in a blue moon or stared up at a harvest moon, reflecting on autumns past. But did you know that each month’s full moon has a name? After my Instagram and Facebook feed lit up this month with a strange amount of mentions of the Harvest Moon, I decided to take a look. This year, we’ve still got three to go: the Hunter’s Moon (October), Beaver Moon (November), and Cold Moon (December).

A fire destroyed a Sun City townhome on September 4, and its effect will probably be felt by residents of Neighborhood 8 for many months to come. The blaze, which neighbors and witnesses reportedly said was accompanied by sounds like explosions, occurred in a six-pack cluster of townhomes in the 13400 block of Michigan Avenue, in Neighborhood 8.

Kathy Weinberg has been solving crossword puzzles for over 30 years. Her husband Roger became interested in the activity and so it began. “I started working with Roger on the New York Time’s Monday puzzle. Monday’s version is the easiest and they get harder each day and Sunday’s puzzle is huge,” said Kathy. Soon, however, the couple would do more than solving the puzzles.

You would think that almost being struck by lightning in the morning would be the most exciting part of your day, wouldn’t you? I would have thought so, too — until it happened, and it wasn’t.
Sun City sends about 35% of the paramedic and fire calls made annually to the Huntley Fire Protection District. About one year after Sun City opened in April, 1999, the fire district built what is now called station 3, located at Regency Parkway and Farm Hill Drive. This location is about one city block from Sun City’s eastern boundary and has been the primary source of fire-rescue service to Sun City.

For her 7th birthday party, second-grader Victoria Gore decided to give gifts to the Animal House Shelter rather than to get them for herself. Why? “Because I want to make sure the kitties are healthy and have everything they need, including toys to play with,” she explains.

Did you know that the number of Americans, age 65 and older, has grown from 35 million in 2000 to 49.2 million in 2016, according to the U.S. Census Bureau? With the average senior living longer today, a tremendous increase in older drivers has occurred on our country’s highways.
On September 12, I received a text from my daughter Sarah. It read ‘A few of my friends and I are thinking about going to a concert this weekend.’ Without hesitation I responded ‘Great! Have fun!’ as soon as I hit the send button, I realized I should have answered a bit more cautiously. I quickly texted ‘Where is it?’ ‘Colorado’ was the answer that followed.

This is a story about football violence and the leadership of an American President. First, a question: What U.S. President has been called “our first athletic President?” I’ll give you a clue – he is known for his contributions to a sport, not because he was a great athlete.

This gets one star only because of Glen Close, who gives us an Oscar worthy performance as the wife, lost in the throes of a forty year marriage slowly going astray. This might have been a two star movie because of the fine acting all around, but the profanity blew the story out the door for us.
