MY SUN DAY NEWS
Sarah, my daughter, is considering attending University of Wisconsin-Madison this fall. She is spending 5 hours in a classroom on campus today taking placement tests. As I dropped her off, she asked what I was planning on doing during those 5 hours.
One weekend, Jim and I found ourselves “discussing” at great length where to go for dinner that Saturday night. During this “discussion,” I did tell him several times where he could go, and it sure wasn’t a restaurant!
Amid Sun City’s busy activities and resort-style living, there are a few groups that pretty much operate in the deep background.
There are 26 of them, and they are called special interest groups. They are generally small groups of residents that pursue various activities inside and outside of Sun City. Unlike Sun City’s 43 charter groups, they are not open to all residents.
Some people feel a sense of freedom when they do something exciting, like go skydiving, cut off all of their hair, or quit a job. The other day, I accidentally left my cell phone at home for about four hours, and I’ve never felt more liberated in my life.
In last week’s column, “A final Valentine’s Day lesson of love everlasting,” I told you of my wife’s passing after 68 years of life and almost 49 years of marriage to me. After writing that painful tale, I thought I would take a break from my column to heal, for as long as it took. I doubted if I would have anything to say for today’s column, or for any column in the future, for that matter. But you changed that.

Now the tennis-pickleball debate has ended, and the construction work will begin. By early fall, the Tall Oaks Tennis Center will technically be the Sun City Tennis-Pickleball Center.

Quick now, Sun City sports fans, what is the only sport that is truly and totally American? According to sports author Dave Anderson, all but one of our sports are offshoots of games developed elsewhere.

As I was growing up, I remember my father repeatedly tweaking the area between my shoulder blades with his fingers as he yelled, “Stand up straight.” At the time, it seemed like a mild annoyance, but I guess “Father knew best.” It isn’t just how you look, however, but how you position your body as you move throughout your life that counts!

Hang in there, we’ve almost made it through another Midwest winter. The days are getting longer and spring is on the horizon. Because we’re all getting grumpy, we thought it would be fitting to pay a visit to the Grumpy Goat Tavern in Elgin.
In 1967, with their survival at stake, Israel launched attacks on three fronts against an Arab coalition, which included Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Iraq. Those nations were intent on the total destruction of the Jewish state. It only took Israel six days to win a decisive military victory.
Flowers, gardening, and just being outside makes us happy. It has been scientifically proven that gardening reduces stress, boosts brain function, improves heart health, and increases self esteem. Both our mental and physical health can be dramatically increased by participating in gardening activities.
This is a heads up for everyone regarding the latest in credit card fraud. This is happening in the Midwest right now and moving across the country.
There are many small things, including several battery changes, you may not have thought about when it comes to garage door maintenance. Lubrication is absolutely necessary for devices like this that operate every day.
I’ve been a caregiver for over 30 years, and I’m now ready to retire and must get something off my chest. I mainly work with people who have mental problems such as Alzheimer’s, depression, bipolar, etc. Why do people treat mentally ill people differently from people that are ill from many other illnesses?
Letters for the week of March 22.
In a fast-growing village, few things wear out faster than the water and waste water systems. The village has about the same water infrastructure that it had back in 1999. In the past 18-plus years, Huntley’s rates have increased very little. When Sun City opened in 1999, the village’s population was less than 3,000. Today, it is about 26,700.

When Sun City resident June Brock remembers her son Scott, words that come to mind are perseverance and determination. In 1982, Scott Hager, the second-born of June’s four children, suffered a diving accident at the age of 21. Just six years later, Scott qualified for the 1988 Summer Paralympic Games in Seoul, Korea, earning a bronze medal in the butterfly stroke. He won numerous other medals as a wheelchair athlete, mostly in swimming, at competitions all over the world, and continued to be an inspiration to many until his death at age 55 in 2016.

It took many years to create, but on February 28, the court-conversion agreement between Sun City’s Pickleball and Tennis clubs finally became a reality.
Just after dinner this Valentine’s Day, while we were in our Florida home, my wife caught my attention as I was washing the dishes. She beamed a beatific smile, flashing me a thumbs-up from her wheelchair. Because she was robbed of speech eight years ago by a pair of severe strokes, there is no way to know exactly what she meant by it. It might have been: “Thanks for cooking my favorite meal tonight.” Or it might have been: “What fun we’ve had over these past few days.” Or it might have been: “I love you so much it almost hurts.” It might even have been her approval of the little solar-powered dancing flower I gave her at breakfast that Valentine’s Day morning, the kind of tiny gesture we both treasure far above grand displays of love.

Reclamation of the vacant Huntley Outlet Mall property has begun. On February 22, more than 10 months after the mall became vacant in 2017, Huntley officials approved three actions that will allow General RV to occupy eight additional acres of the former mall property next to the I-90 tollway.

Wall Street Journal (WSJ) in their January 2, 2018 publication informs us to stop counting calories because it is the clock that counts. Written by WSJ’s Life & Arts Department author, Sumathi Reddy, the article discusses Time-Restricted Feeding (TRF). This strategy is increasingly being studied in a multitude of trials. Researchers are hoping that it will be used as a tool for diabetes prevention, weight-loss, and even longevity.
Believe it or not, Nancy has a real job. She is a travel agent, and years ago she won a river cruise for two through Bavaria with a German cruise line. Out of 80 passengers, only 10 spoke English. As we were sailing along, our cruise director would point out various landmarks and give a five minute dissertation in German. He would then point and say to us in English, “there it is.” While showing her clients some photos of our trip, she developed a taste for German food. We remembered seeing the Bavarian Lodge in Lisle and decided now would be a good time to review this restaurant.
Minor repairs anyone can do.
My mom had a fall recently and broke her arm. It sounds like a fairly innocent incident, but since then she has never been the same. She went through physical therapy and healed well but now, she has anxiety and battles depression. Her anxiety keeps her from engaging in life with joy. She is aware of this struggle, and my father and I are at a loss as to how to help her. How can we be a positive source to her?
If you’re a movie fan you have your list of favorites, and most likely some or all of them contain unforgettable moments, which may endure long after the details of the movie have escaped your mind. Below I’ve listed a few of mine, although there is not enough space in the Sun Day News for all of them. If you have a favorite moment or two, email them to me at the address below. I’ll be anxious to hear.
