It was a cold, dreary, Sunday morning. Cabin fever was rearing its ugly rear. Nancy was staring blindly at the computer screen when she noticed a Groupon coupon for a new brunch restaurant. I was staring at the TV screen sucking down my first cup of coffee when she yelled, “Breakfast is ready!” We bundled ourselves up, jumped into the Dining Duo Mini-Mobile, which now resembles a block of salt, and headed for Southern Belles Pancake House in Carpentersville.
My siblings and I take turns bringing our mother to her doctor visits. We seem to have a handle on the appointments, but when it comes to keeping records, we often have details that fall through the cracks. This leaves us feeling frustrated. How can we manage her doctor visits, so we are all on the same page?
No one reading this can forget where they were or what they were doing when 9/11 hit. It was like a bullet between the eyes for all of us. On the other hand, few if any of us remember the date October 16, 2001, the date when the first combat teams from our military began the fight in Afghanistan. If you’re anything like my father, what I’m about to say will put a chill into you: From the age of 22 to 37 my wife and I didn’t have health insurance. And although a risk, I can honestly say it was the best money never spent. Granted, those were the carefree days of young adulthood where health concerns were of little worry, but ever since getting health insurance three years ago, I’ve never been more scared in my life that something will go wrong. And this is not a case of superstition. I’m not worried that now that I have health insurance I’ll get sick. I am worried, however, about dealing with health insurance.

T’was the week before Christmas and all the presents were wrapped, the cookies were baked, and the tension within our family was running rampant. According to our nation’s leaders, opioid abuse has now reached an epidemic level in our country, especially among younger Americans. However, most of us are unaware of the opioid abuse and dependence (often unintentionally) being discovered among older U.S. adults, as well.
I simply do not do well with mice. Some of the scariest moments of my life have involved an animal that is no bigger than 4”, but has the ability to turn me from relatively calm to screaming, swearing and running at a moment’s notice. My kids learned this lesson when they were very young. Sarah, aged 3, was forced to pick up a stick and say “I’ll protect you Mommy” after a mouse nest was discovered on our deck.
