SUN CITY – If you are looking to add some pizzazz into your day or even your home, the biannual Affair of the Arts art show offers entertainment, beauty, and fellowship in a wooded setting at The Shores of Turtle Creek in Spring Grove on Sunday, November 14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“I’ve been in it for the last two years,” says Elaine Kadakia of N. 11. “It’s a beautiful setting, and it’s so much fun because you have live music, and the setting itself is like a lodge, with lots of open areas.”

The Affair of the Arts features local artists exhibiting their pottery, fused glass, jewelry, metalwork, fine art painting, photography, and more.

“There’s a lot of local artists,” says Kadakia, who will be featuring her pottery at the show. “As far as I know, I’m the only one from Sun City.”

Kadakia became involved in the show through someone at McHenry County College, where she takes pottery classes, who also participates.

“I started doing pottery at the lodge here in Sun City about 7 years ago,” says Kadakia, instructed by Cathleen De Creane. “I had not done much pottery [till then], but I did have an art background. That certainly comes into play when I am working with clay.”

Kadakia has a degree in Art education but is now retired. “For many years, I did two-dimension work. But when I started working with clay, I discovered a whole new way of doing art, and that was the plasticity of clay and the techniques: you can stamp on clay, you can carve, taking away clay.”

Kadakia describes her work as “art pottery,” and though she throws clay on a wheel and also does slab work, her favorite mode of working with clay is carving.

“What I like about it is that … it’s a material that’s so easy to work with. It’s very challenging, the kind of techniques you can use. I particularly like carving. I’m taking away bits of clay, and I’m creating a surface that you can feel. It’s a very tactile kind of feeling,” says Kadakia.

Kadakia has made everything from figurines to vases to bowls. “I like working with cylinder shape[s],” she says. “I try to really make each piece very unique.”

Kadakia loves the challenge of using glazes and underglazes in her work. “You never know what’s going to happen when you pick things out of the glaze kiln. It’s always a surprise.”

Kadakia is a member of the pottery club in Sun City, Clayground, takes classes at McHenry County College, participates in pottery classes at Sun City, and is a member of the McHenry County Clayworkers’ Guild. Some of her artwork is on display at the courthouse in Woodstock under the McHenry County Clayworkers’ Guild.

“I do enjoy selling my work and knowing that someone is going to have something they enjoy, something that they will look at and [that will] be part of their world,” says Kadakia.

Affair of the Arts is a free event where visitors can browse, shop, and visit with the local artists, enjoying a glass of wine and refreshments, live music, and the chance to win one of 35 art prizes in a free art raffle.

“I’m looking forward to it,” says Kadakia.
