Prairie Singers director preps for first concert

SUN CITY – People filed into the Fountain View Room at Prairie Lodge as the clock reached 6:00 on a Tuesday evening, the start of an average practice for the Prairie Singers.

As the room settled down, Eugene Rhodes, the president of the Prairie Singers, issued some announcements before the group began their rehearsal. The music started, Bill Leggee started directing, and the choir started to sing.

Leggee has only been directing the Prairie Singers for a short time but has been a member of the group for about 12 years.

“His experience made him a good choice,” said Rhodes.

From teaching music to kids to directing his church choir, for most of his life, Leggee has been in the music scene.

“I have my masters in singing, I might as well use it,” said Leggee.

Leggee will direct his first Prairie Singers concert on June 22 at Huntley High School.

After Nancy Cross stepped down as former director of the Prairie Singers, Leggee was asked to take the job. At first he refused, but by the second offer he was ready to work with them.

“I’m surprised with how good he turned out to be,” said Bobbi Vinton, future co-president of the Prairie Singers.

Bobbi Vinton will take over the presidency along with Prairie Singer Dwight Esau on July 15 and is working hard to help the group.

“It’s fun to develop our skills and then have a show to display our accomplishments,” said Vinton.

The concert will showcase many patriotic numbers, such as “United We Stand.” During this song, there will be flags from each service to represent them.

“It’s important that we honor them and rally around the flag,” said Leggee.

The Prairie Singers hope for support from the community as they go through their final rehearsals.

With over 70 people in the choir, it is a large increase since their first show in December of 2000.

“It’s hard to get so many people to sing together in tune, but when the band joins, it will all come together,” said Leggee.
