Triple feature: three thumbs up

By Tom Sansom

You may or may not have noticed I missed the last two editions, for a variety of reasons. Now that I am back in the saddle, there is a little catching up to do.

First however, I have a question. Does anyone know where there is a farm stand or other outlet where we can buy “non GMO” corn?  If you do know of a place, please send me an email at the address below. Thanks in advance.

Christopher Robin: PG. Thumbs up.

So whatever happened to Christopher Robin after he inevitably had to leave his boyhood friends behind and grow up? This is the story, as Christopher leaves Winnie the Pooh and all of his other amazing little friends and heads into the real world. We join Robin, played by Ewan McGregor (one of my favorite actors) as a family man with an important job at Winslow Industries in post- World War 2 London. Called upon to spend more and more hours at work, his home life begins to suffer, especially time away from his young daughter Matilda.

The story drags a bit through the first part, but livens up considerably when Winnie and his friends re-enter Christopher Robin’s world, too complicated to explain how, but fun to watch. Then we are treated to an adventurous climax as Christopher and his friends turn London upside down in a hilarious sequence through train stations, cab rides, and into the boardroom of Winslow Industries.

That thirty-minute sequence had the audience humming and when it was over everyone had a smile on their face. I should warn you this is not a kiddie movie, despite the presence of all of A.A. Milne’s loveable characters. Pre-schoolers and early elementary aged children will be bored with much of it. Regardless, if you are young at heart and looking for a change of pace you could do much worse.

Mission Impossible: Fallout: PG-13 (lots of violence, death and scattered profanity). Thumbs Up.

This was not high on my list to begin with, but when the grandson asks, you drop everything and go. I will admit it was entertaining, and how Tom Cruise at his age is able to perform most of his stunts is beyond me. For Pete’s sake the man is old enough to live right here in River City, but prances around like someone half his age. That was worth the price of admission alone.

(My) old saying is if you’ve seen one Mission Impossible film you’ve seen them all. This is the sixth film starring Cruise as Ethan Hunt, the one man wrecking crew to those seeking world disruption. The villains may change, and ever improving technology permits more license with the special effects, but it’s the man and his team that take front and center, solving problems no one else can approach. His heroics rival those of any of our “super hero” friends, but we have to remind ourselves Ethan Hunt is only human, or is he? If you are a fan of these kind of movies you’ll love this one.

Larger Than Life (1996): PG. Thumbs Up.

This is a delightful, light hearted comedy starring Bill Murray as Jack Corcoran. His father passes away and leaves him an 8000-pound elephant named Vera. How and why aren’t important here.  His first mission is to sell the elephant, and he is successful in locating two interested buyers. There are however, problems galore; Murray and the elephant are in Maryland, the buyers in California. He has little money, no mode of transportation and a five-day window to get Vera to her destination.

You can let your imagination run wild, and you won’t come close to the obstacles and merriment created by this situation. This is fun to watch and Murray is at his best, and by the end of the story, you may decide you like Vera a whole lot.
