Q. I need to slow down. I am a caregiver to both my parents and I am burning the candle at both ends. I need a little motivation to help me. I do give myself permission to take a break, but I get right back into a frantic pace. Help!

A. I am encouraged that you, in fact, give yourself a little break, but it seems like that is not enough. The other thing I am encouraged about, is that you have reached out to ask for help. Most caregivers don’t do this, and then caregiver burnout becomes a challenge. So, you have reached out here, but it is more important to ask and accept the help of others. It is okay to do this! Reach out to friends and family members. They are probably more willing than you think! We may feel like we are imposing, but they probably would welcome the chance to be of help. If you or your parents are members of a church, you can reach out to them to explore options for yourself there. Make sure you take care of yourself by engaging in exercise as well as relaxing activities. And, don’t forget to laugh! If the thought of exercise adds pressure to your life, think outside the box. Take dance lessons, learn yoga, or join a walking club. These activities will help reduce stress in your life. And don’t forget to laugh. Treat yourself to a funny movie or get together with friends for a relaxing evening. Laughter is great medicine and can relieve stress and tension. Think about the things you might like to do and pick up a new hobby. A new book, a scheduled massage, or even a simple manicure can work wonders for you. It is an opportunity to recharge, which will enrich your psyche and give you an uplifted disposition. Your parents will benefit from this! Most importantly, keep a positive attitude. With the new year starting, some people make a resolution, which is hard to keep. Instead, choose one word that will be the focus for your year. Keep it in front of you and let it be a reminder of who you want to be, or what attribute you want to embody. Keep a gratitude journal and focus on the blessings life offers. This opens doors to taking care of yourself and it all works to make you a better caregiver. Above all, smile! It will do wonders for you!
