Clubs combine to create together with clay

By Christine Such

Sometimes two clubs are better than one.

This year, two Sun City clubs joined together to share the experience of creating ceramic pieces with their grandchildren.

According to Cathleen Chay of the Clayground, the event was a success.

“Thirty-nine children and about the same number of grandparents playing together, laughing together, and creating clay masterpieces together, what could be better than that?” she said.

The well-organized event gave the younger children an opportunity to decorate beautiful tiles, the group of children older than six years old had fun creating little clay animals, and the older grandchildren created an owl wall hanging and had an opportunity to try the wheel.

Cindy Ptak of GG&ME, said, “This was a wonderful event, so well-organized and tailor-made for our grandkids! Just another example of Sun City’s amazing residents and their willingness to share their talents! Thanks to all the ClayGround volunteers for their thoughtful planning and patient guidance for our grandchildren! Hope we can partner with this awesome group of people again in the future. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Chay elaborated, “The event was a wonderful collaboration between GG&M and Clayground clubs. Everyone had a great time. The highlight of the day for the older kids (10 and up) was the opportunity to work with clay on the potter’s wheel.”

Mackenzie and Cooper McGraw said their favorite part was “Being together as a family and having fun making art.”

Grandchild Izzy Keegan said, “I liked getting messy loved making elephants and making all kinds of things.”

Sibling Hadley Keegan agreed.

Kali Kiss thought, “It was fun making the whole thing, to make each piece, piece by piece. This overall experience was so much fun! Definitely, want to do this again.”

Some activities were especially popular.

Julia Lamour said, “I loved making my bunny. I also made a carpet for my bunny and table with carrots.”

Some grandkids learned new skills.

“The wheel made my hands tingle,” said Emelyn Buczek. “I made a bowl too! Fun time with Grandma.”

Her twin sister Ella Buzek agreed.

“I like the way my owl turned out. The wheel was fun. I also made a cup out of clay, too. Had fun with Grandma!” she said.
