Good things come to those who bait

By Christine Such

This year’s Anglers Fishing Derby was a hit with residents, and an even bigger thrill for their grandkids.

“It’s so much fun watching them,” said Dan Adelmund. “Our grandson, Jayden, was scared at first, but then proud.”

His wife, Sharron, added, “He caught 10 fish so far.”

The Anglers make sure that there is an incentive to participate, and hook people in with prizes and medals.

Randy Johnson, president of the Anglers’ Club said, “Six or eight of our Anglers personally donated some great prizes: the fishing poles, fishing lures, and many other fishing-related prizes. Along with the Grandma, Grandpa, & Me Club, we got some great prizes contributed by local businesses.”

Ava Seiden, in the age category 2-7, caught the most fish – 18 total. She also scored the largest Blue Gill at 9 inches, the largest bass at 15 inches, and biggest catfish at 10 inches.

In the older age group over 8, the catches were divided among other grandchildren.

Adam Keehan caught a Blue Gill at 8.5 inches). Ella Buczek snagged the largest catch – a bass at 18 inches, and her twin sister, Emelyn, caught a 9-inch Crappie. Ben Bird caught an 11-inch catfish. Bryden Gresik found a 12-inch bullhead.

The Anglers provided a lot of individual support.

Johnson said, “We provided the bait, bobbins, and hooks. We have 12 volunteers here to help all the grandkids. I was so surprised that my phone started ringing and they all wanted to help. They care.”

Huntley High School students volunteered as well. They were the runners for capturing the type of fish caught and the length. It was a hot day and tough job, but they were quick to get the stats on the latest catch.

Johnson said, “Our members helped the kids to cast. These kids are important.”

Angler Dick Gubrine said, “We love doing this. The kids appreciate it. They have fun.”

Marilynn Berendt, a grandmother, said, “It’s a beautiful day and the help from the Anglers is super. Our Lily fished for the first time and so far, caught 6 fish.”
