Twelve-foot mammoth sunflower draws admirers

By Christine Such

Fred Senft grew a mammoth sunflower that stands an estimated 12 feet tall outside his Sun City home.

“I just planted a couple of seeds and it kept growing. Now, my neighbors are requesting seeds from the sunflower,” he said.

In the back of their home is a sunflower that stretches over the roof of the house. A few feet away from it stands a smaller version of the flower.

Senft said, “I call the tall guy Mr. and that’s his Mrs. next to him.”

Senft enjoys tending to the flower garden, planting, and caring for the variety of flowers around his home.

Senft said, “I take care of the flower garden and my wife, Delores enjoys taking care of the lawn. It’s our exercise, instead of going to the lodge to work out; we work in our yard.”

The Sunflower face is more than a foot across, sitting atop a 12-foot plant.

Senft said, “It’s attracting the cardinals and other birds. They are enjoying the treat.”
