December is full of family traditions. They’re part of what makes this month so special. And while family traditions take a bit of planning, Janet Kargo will tell you it is so worth it.
Some might think that teenagers have outgrown the magic of holiday traditions. But Addie Freimuth, 15, and Alex Freimuth, 17, still enjoy celebrating the Christmas holiday with its traditional games, cookie decoration, and projects on Christmas Eve.

Kargo, their grandmother, said, “I cherish this time with them. They are so loveable and are starting to take care of me now. Alex is taller than me and I remember holding him when he was just a couple of hours old. I enjoy thinking of activities and games each year for the holiday season.”
Alex said, “I love all the games we play every year together.”
What activities have they done?
Kargo said, “We have decorated snowmen, made gingerbread houses, decorated cookies, guessing games, ring toss, and always start our Christmas Eve celebration with finding the pickle and of course some favorite dishes to eat.”
Addie said, “I love the ham roll-ups every year.”
The game challenges have included opening the Christmas presents with oven mitts, reindeer toss games, finding an ornament or one gift. But the most completive game played was marshmallow baseball.
Kane said, “There was some serious ball playing. The large candy cane bats used to hit the marshmallows out of the park. The canes took some beating and the ‘bats’ cracked.”
What are the Kargol’s plans for this year?
Janet Kargol said, “Finding the pickle is one thing we do almost as soon as they walk in. We are having a contest on how high you can build a tower with gumdrops and toothpicks without it falling down. We have a Christmas rendition of bozo buckets, and we are decorating ugly sweater cookies. I usually have a guessing game in a holiday container. This year is an elf that will be filled with M&Ms.”
Alex and Addie’s parents enjoy the traditions as well. Mom, Jennifer Freimuth explained what it’s really all about.
“I love all the games and time we spend together,” she said.
