Sun City residents share favorite places for nutritious meals

Proper nutrition is vital for good health no matter how old we are. However, cooking meals from scratch every day can be difficult for anyone, and senior citizen meal planning needs to ensure that nutritional needs are met.

Sun City residents do have alternatives to making that meal every day. Just minutes from their front door, residents can take advantage of various dining options, including meal prep kits delivered to their door.

Renate Bimbi said, “I care for my dad with dementia in Del Webb. He is widowed and does not cook for himself. There is no sit-down, home-cooked meal restaurants open in the evenings. We stumbled upon Lucky Bernies in Huntley adjacent to the Jewel near Reed Road. It is a super clean, newer small business that promotes fresh deli sandwiches and soups. The lunch meat is sliced fresh at the deli. The sandwiches are so good.”

Kathy Leavitt, the owner of Lucky Bernies, said, “We feature hand-crafted sandwiches made with Boar’s Head meats and cheeses. We are a full-service deli. We have soups that are made from scratch.”

Lucky Bernies offers a 10% discount for seniors.

Barb Doty recommends the Village Inn in Downtown Huntley. Doty said, “Village Inn Family Restaurant in town is open in the evenings for dinner. There is a large selection of senior dinners at a very reasonable price which includes delicious homemade soup, beverages, and ice cream. You can’t beat this deal.”

Venetia Kamberis from Village Inn said, “Village Inn Family Restaurant is a family diner. We truly try and do our best to satisfy everyone and want you to feel just like you’re at home.

You can also subscribe to meal delivery services with a senior-friendly menu with the ability to choose your meals for the week.”

Parsla Gagainis uses Seattle Sutton’s, which is delivered here to Sun City at Meadow View Lodge.

Gagainis said, “I order the 4-day package online. The convenience is great and the meals are tasty. I chose the 1200-calorie plan. It is much better than frozen. All the meals are fresh, wholesome ingredients, sensible calorie and portion control, with low sodium, and do not have any unhealthy additives and preservatives.”

Lynn Geraty recommends Factor.

Geraty said, “I have used it for about four years now. My favorite foods are the keto choice chicken dishes with a vegetable. I am gluten-free, and all their food is gluten-free. I use it for half of the week. It is especially convenient for days you are busy or too tired to cook.”

Daily Harvest, another venue to choose your meals and get them delivered to the door offers organic fruits and veggies delivered to your doorstep.

Susan Smith said, “We’ve started to order from Daily Harvest. It’s the best we’ve tried so far – plant-based, single serving, all frozen so you can eat whenever with no planning ahead. Many of the ingredients are completely unknown to us. Everything is easy, healthy, and absolutely delicious.”

In Lifestyles there is a flyer for Meal Village and a $20 off your first order. Ellen Madura has tried it a few times. Madura said, “The beauty of Meal Village, in my opinion, is that the food comes freshly made, not frozen. We have used them a few times. Everything we’ve ordered has been very good. They even have an introductory offer for new clients.”
