Q. I’m an active senior who loves staying physically active throughout the year. However, as winter approaches, I find myself facing a dilemma. Last winter was the first winter where staying active during the colder months became a challenge for me. For most of my life, staying active has been a source of great joy and vitality. I especially enjoy hiking, swimming, cycling, and taking long walks. It’s how I keep my body in shape and take care of my mind.

As the winter season approaches this year, I’m worried that the colder weather, shorter days, and hazardous conditions are going to limit my opportunities for outdoor activities. I’m eager to maintain my active lifestyle, but I’m not sure how to adapt my routine to the challenges of winter. Do you have any recommendations about how I can continue to pursue a healthy and active lifestyle as a senior in the winter months?

A. I commend you for your pursuit of an active lifestyle. I also admire your willingness to acknowledge your limitations and your desire to stay active as the weather turns colder. Fortunately, there are many ways you can continue to pursue exercise and stay engaged during the colder season.

Embrace the beauty of winter by trying out winter sports, like cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. These activities can provide an excellent workout while allowing you to enjoy the outdoors as you’re used to. Remember to dress warmly in layers. If you enjoy these winter sports, invest in appropriate gear and clothing that are designed to keep you warm, comfortable, and safe.

You mentioned you like to swim. Look for indoor pools in your area so that you can continue to swim even on the colder days.

Although it sounds like you’re used to swimming outdoors, the nice thing about indoor pools is that they’re often a warm environment. Being in an indoor pool can transport you to warmer days and motivate you to stay active. Consider signing up for a water aerobics class designed for seniors, which can be a great way to meet other active older adults.

When the outdoor weather becomes too hazardous for hiking and long walks, consider mall walking. Many shopping malls open their doors early for mall-walking programs. This provides a safe, climate-controlled environment for walking, socializing, and staying active during the winter. It also offers a change of scenery, especially if you shift from outdoor exercise to strictly indoor exercise at home.

Another strategy to stay active during the winter is to participate in a senior fitness class. Explore local community centers or fitness studios that offer senior-specific fitness classes. These classes are tailored to the needs and abilities of older adults and generally focus on strength, flexibility, and balance. By enrolling in a class, you’ll feel held accountable while also enjoying the benefits of working out with new friends.

Finally, consider using the winter months to incorporate indoor exercise into your daily routine. Winter is the perfect time for seniors to focus on strength training exercises in order to maintain muscle mass and build endurance. It also provides opportunities to explore other forms of exercise, such as yoga or tai chi.

I hope these suggestions help you stay active and engaged during the winter months. Remember it’s essential to stay positive and adaptable during the winter months. Wishing you a healthy and fit winter.
