Q. I’m a widow in her seventies seeking advice on managing seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Over the last few years, I’ve found myself slipping into a state of loneliness and melancholy after the rush of the holiday season. The isolation of widowhood, compounded by the gloomy weather, weighs heavily on me. I’ve heard that engaging in hobbies and activities can combat SAD. However, as someone who spends a lot of time alone, I struggle to find motivation or inspiration to pursue such interests. I’d appreciate advice on how to reignite my passion for hobbies (I’ve always enjoyed painting landscapes), or other mood-boosting practices that can bring me relief this winter season.

Place a canvas in a bright room, perhaps near a window that displays an enticing view or allows natural light to flood in. Surround yourself with the tools of your craft, so that you can quickly pick up the hobby when motivation strikes. Perhaps seeing your homemade art studio will allure you into pursuing this favorite pastime.

Additionally, consider different hobbies that spark your curiosity. Maybe delve into another pursuit that relates to creativity, such as photography, pottery, or writing. Pick up how-to books about these subjects from your local library and expand your horizons. Exploring new interests could reignite that sense of fulfillment and joy you’ve been missing. 
Remind yourself that hobbies aren’t just about the activity itself; they’re about the journey, the learning, and the sense of accomplishment. They provide a sense of purpose and distraction, helping to combat feelings of loneliness and chasing away the winter blues.

You might find that creating a routine that includes time for pursuing hobbies works wonders. Consider your usual routine and schedule time specifically for pursuing your hobbies. Routines help create structure. They also create a sense of anticipation and can steer your day toward more productivity, instead of focusing on your loneliness.

Speaking of loneliness, consider reaching out to local community centers or groups that share your interests. Since you mentioned art, perhaps you set a goal of signing up for an adult art class or attending an art lecture this month. Connecting with others who enjoy similar hobbies can provide a sense of belonging and companionship, which can be particularly comforting during this season.

Finally, consider incorporating other activities that are known to provide a mood boost. Exercise, in particular, does wonders and provides an instant mood boost that lasts for several hours. Spending time outdoors and getting some natural light and fresh air significantly impacts mood. Be mindful of your diet and be sure to eat a balance of fruits, vegetables, lean protein, whole grains, and healthy fats.

Remember, finding joy in hobbies isn’t just about combatting SAD; it’s about enriching your life and nursing your well-being. Embrace this winter season as an opportunity to explore new passions and rediscover the joy in the activities you love.
