Scholarships awarded to Huntley Students

By Christine Such

The Huntley Rotary Club awarded four scholarships to Huntley High School students this year. As always, the Rotary Club supports efforts to further one’s education. The primary way in which the Club supports its goal of further education is through the annual scholarships it awards.

This year, Mackenzie Billard, Kate Burkey, Brooke Rogers, and Sara Willis received $500 scholarships from the Rotary Club at a breakfast celebration with the students and families. These scholarships symbolize a recognition of their hard work and dedication. The scholarships will help prepare them for the future and fuel their passion for a specific career, making a significant difference in their lives.

Jim Ulszer, a Sun City resident and Rotarian said, “These scholarship winners were chosen not just because of their grade point averages but also because of their service in our community. Rotary’s motto is service above self, and the students demonstrated that through their volunteerism on many levels.”

Joining the celebration were Dr. Belin, Huntley High School principal, and Laura Martens, Huntley High School college and career counselor, who attended the presentation. Rotarians included Jim Ulszer, Karen Hutchings, Jim Drendel, and Rudi Welvers.

Thom Palmer, a charter member of the Rotary Club of Huntley, was also present. Palmer was club president and a long-time Huntley Rotarian who established the annual $500 Thom Palmer Scholarship. The Scholarship honors Palmer and his tireless work and leadership with Rotary and the Huntley Park District. Ken and Karen Black sponsor the scholarship and joined Palmer in present the scholarship to Brooke Rogers received

Ulszer said, “The Huntley Rotary Club raises funds for these scholarships through the Running of the Elves 5k in December and the Spring Mystery Dinner in partnership with the Huntley Park District. These events are successful because of the overwhelming support and participation from our community. In addition, the Rotary Club of Huntley works on many other projects throughout the year, giving back to our community.”

At the event, Ulster awarded Chocolatier Claudia Kendzior, Proprietor of Morkes Chocolates in Huntley, an honorary membership in the Rotary Club. Being an honorary member of a Rotary club signifies recognition for significant contributions and service to Rotary and society.

Support the Running of the Elves in 2025, which begins at downtown Huntley Square as part of Very Merry Huntley, with a 5K run, 1-mile walk, and dash. The run benefits the community and high school scholarships.
