Sun City’s Sunflower Charter Club has awarded scholarships to students for three years. The club raised funds through the sale of its annual hanging baskets.
Paulette Carrion, President of the club, said, “This year, Sunflower Garden Club awarded three $1000 scholarships at our June meeting to Huntley High School graduating students.”
Darlene Pratt, a key member of the Scholarship team, along with club members Alice Benedict, Marilynn Berendt, Janet Gorgius, and Chris Schellhaas shared, “This is the third year of our scholarship awards, and in those three years, we have awarded $8000 to eight students from District 158. The 2025 recipients, Rebecca Rocks, Annaliese Garrard, and Logan Hastings, are uniquely qualified to receive the Sunflower Scholarship. Each is pursuing careers and fields that are important to each of us, our community, and our world.”
Rocks, with her dedication to environmental science, expressed, “It’s not just about the financial support; it’s a chance of committing to care for our environment.”
Garrand, who is pursuing a degree in agricultural science and natural resources, expressed that “The funds are more than just financial but would be recognition of the perseverance, resilience, and personal growth I have developed throughout my life.”
Hastings, who will pursue an education as an agricultural technician and a future farmer, said, “I want to focus on the equipment needed by farmers and the agricultural community.”
The celebration concluded with a heartwarming reception for the recipients and their parents, with a potluck provided by the members of the Sunflower Garden Club, showcasing the community’s support and involvement.
