Ask an Angel: October 9, 2025

By

Q. This year, summer seemed to hang on well into September, and I let my healthy habits slide. Between the heat, cookouts, and slower pace, I got out of my routine. I found myself skipping walks, spending more time indoors, and saying yes to comfort food more than I should have.

Now it’s October, and the cooler weather is a wake-up call. I’m 76, retired, and overall in decent shape, but I can feel that I’m not where I want to be. I want to feel stronger, more energized, and more in control before winter sneaks up on me.

I’m also learning that retirement has its challenges. I used to squeeze in exercise before or after work, but now that I can exercise at any time, I’ve learned that I end up putting it off. The discipline I had when I was working full-time isn’t quite sticking, and I don’t want that to become my new normal.

What are some simple ways I can get my health back on track this fall, without giving up everything fun?

A. Thank you for your thoughtful letter. Many people feel the same way this time of year. The long summer days can throw off even the best intentions, and by October, it’s easy to look up and realize you’re not quite where you hoped to be. But the good news is that fall is a fantastic time to refocus.

Let’s start with movement. Cooler temperatures make it easier to get outside again, so ease back into daily walks or light activity. Even 20–30 minutes most days can make a noticeable difference. If staying motivated on your own is tough, try connecting with a local senior fitness class through your rec center or YMCA. A little structure and some friendly faces can help bring back that routine you’re missing.

As the season shifts, think ahead to how you’ll stay active when it’s too cold or icy to walk outside. Chair exercises, light stretching, or online senior fitness videos are great options. Even pacing your house while listening to music or a podcast can help keep your body moving.

Next, let’s discuss food. Don’t stress about being perfect, just be intentional. Make room for fall favorites, but try limiting sweets to a couple of times a week. Fill your plate with more veggies, lean proteins, and whole grains.

Since you mentioned retirement, you’re not alone in realizing that more flexibility can make sticking to healthy habits harder. Try adding a little structure back into your day. Set a time to exercise and treat it like an appointment. Also, make time for meal prep so that you always have a healthy option on hand.

This season isn’t about getting it perfect; it’s about resetting with care. One good walk, one better meal, one yes to your own well-being at a time.

You’ve got everything you need to get back on track. Fall isn’t the end of the year; it’s a fresh beginning.
