Fishing derby makes big splash!

The weather was perfect on July 25; the fish were biting, and the grandkids and grandparents had a great time at the Fishing Derby.

This popular event was hosted in conjunction with the Del Webb Anglers for Sun City residents and their grandchildren over two years of age. Prizes were awarded for various categories for ages 2-7 and 8 and above. Each child was able to choose a prize due to the generosity of donations from the Anglers, grandparents, Bait Shanty, Ace Hardware in Huntley, Culvers, and Moretti’s.

Randy Johnson, past president of the Anglers, has coordinated many fishing derby events.  

Johnson stated, “This event was a resounding success. It was well attended, and lots of fish were caught, many of them by kids for the first time. The adults were actively involved and shared the experience. The Anglers were enthusiastic about helping and offered fishing tips. This event represents a shared experience for Grandma, Grandpa, & Me (GG&Me), in conjunction with the Anglers. It is always a success, and this year was no exception. I am sure the kids enjoyed the refreshments, prizes, and sharing their experiences. With the success of this year’s fishing derby, we can’t help but look forward to its continuation next year. We hope to see you all there again, ready to make more wonderful memories.”

The Angler’s Bait Shop played a crucial role in the event, going above and beyond to ensure the kids had a great time. They provided the worms and even assisted grandparents who needed help with baiting their hooks. They were instrumental in helping the kids hook and release their catches, as well as in providing fishing lessons and untangling lines. Their dedication and support were truly appreciated.

Joyce Ugarte, past president of GG&Me, volunteered her time, efforts, and organizational skills to chair this event again. Her husband, Mike, picked up the pizzas to feed the hungry crowd after a morning of fishing.

Kathy Wendhack, Vice-President of GG&Me, shared her personal enjoyment of the event with her grandkids.

“We had a great time. Thanks to all. The grandkids had a blast,” she said.

Leslie Williams agreed.

“It was our first time at derby. The grandkids, Mason and Mia, had a good time,” she said. “Even better than catching a few fish was picking out their prizes. Thank you to GG&Me and Angler clubs.”
