Since its establishment in 2002, Sun City has been a steadfast participant in National Night Out (NNO). This enduring tradition, deeply rooted in the community, fosters police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie, enhancing the safety and quality of life in our neighborhoods.
Under the dedicated sponsorship and direction of the Neighborhood Watch/Neighbors Helping Neighbors (NW/NHN) Committee, this year’s NNO is set to take place on August 5.
The committee is led by Jim Uszler, President; Jim Saletta, Vice President; Bunny McGahan, Publicity; Debbie Liberatore, Donation Coordinator; and Kate Liewald, Recorder. They have been instrumental in planning and executing this event, with the active involvement and support of our community members.
The NW/NHN Committee was formed in response to a collective concern about crime and safety issues in Sun City.
As Uszler recalls, “In 2002, the group started with a van and a concern of construction material being stolen. Volunteers were driving around checking for open garage doors, papers in driveways, and burnt-out house lights, along with monitoring the construction sites.”
The committee’s proactive measures, along with NNO, aim to raise awareness about crime prevention and drug abuse, ensuring the safety and security of our community.
The traditional softball game, police vs. fire, is not just a fun activity, but also a symbol of the strong partnership between the local police and fire departments. It will be held at Veterans Memorial Field, starting at 2 p.m.
Uszler invites residents to “Come cheer for the Blue or the Red at our softball match-up. It is an excellent opportunity to meet your neighbors, police officers, and village officials.”
The long-standing tradition at baseball games, cracker jacks, will be provided. DiFiore Funeral Home is donating water for the event. There will also be additional raffle prizes for the 50/50 raffle.
Uszler said, “You can buy your tickets from the residents wearing this year’s National Night Out shirts.”
Sun City resident Fred Joob will be singing the national anthem. The Marine Corps Color Guard will open the event. The play-by-play will be provided by Gary Krewer.
Not to mention, the game is high stakes.
Uszler said, “The winning team will take possession of the travelling trophy. They will have bragging rights for a year.”
