Woodchucks donate toys to Food Pantry

Those elves are at it again! The Sun City Woodchucks are hard at work crafting toys to put under the tree. It may not be the North Pole (although the temperatures feel like it!), but the Woodshop is bustling with activity this holiday season.

On Oct. 10, Neighborhood 18 (Monarch Ridge) celebrated their 10th year as neighbors. Known as The Neighborhood That Cares, approximately 90-plus residents attended this special event in the Drendel Ballroom. Our Activity Committee planned this special event, inviting all our neighbors and included former neighbors who lived here and moved.

World War II veteran tells his story

World War II veteran, Gerald Stark of Hampshire, was recently interviewed in his home by Dan Olmsted, the historian and curator of the National WW II Museum located in New Orleans, www.nationalww2museum.org.

Breakfast with Santa

The annual Grandma, Grandpa & Me Breakfast with Santa will be held on Sunday, December 14 in Drendel Hall. The Breakfast Buffet is provided by Jameson’s. In addition to visiting with Santa, we will have entertainment and Holly Veach will once again be taking pictures. There are two seatings: 9-10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are $16 adult (14 and over); $8 children ages 3-13; and children 2 and under are free, but still need a ticket.

Magic In the Moonlight: Illusion or not?

Woody Allen excels in three distinct arenas in the world of entertainment. First, as a young man he was as good a stand-up comedian as I have seen, but that goes all the way back to black and white TV. Secondly he writes movie scripts with a distinct and creative flair, almost all of them “out of the box” experiences. Finally, he takes those scripts and turns them into great movies, particularly if he doesn’t act in them, as lately has been the case (thank goodness!).

Main street bridge re-opens, new traffic signals

The McHenry County Division of Transportation is pleased to announce the bridge rehabilitation work is complete and Main Street has been re-opened to traffic.

Been cruisin’ Illinois Drive for 15 years

Hosts Jerry and Margaret Krebs invited all the original homeowners who moved to Illinois Dr. in 1999. Thirty-seven neighbors attended a pot-luck part on July 16 to celebrate their meeting 15 years ago.

‘Jersey Boys’ captures the moment

There are literally dozens of pop musical groups who have made an indelible mark in the world of entertainment and earned their place not only in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, but their fans hearts forever. Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons are one of them. They burst onto the scene in 1962 with the infamous hit “Sherry,” which to this day is still one of the hallmark songs of the 1960’s rock-‘n-roll era.

Along the prairie path

Just as the winter brought coyotes to our back yards, the summer brings predators from the sky. This hawk decided to stop by and park itself on the railing of my porch.

Sun City resident people’s choice winner

Linda Carney’s painting of a 1920 image of Huntley’s first school bus was the People’s Choice winner in a recent Huntley history art contest. Carney, of Sun City Huntley, won $100 for having created the most popular artwork.
